Why I Recommend Starting Wedding Dress Alterations 4–5 Weeks Before Your Wedding?
When to start wedding dress alterations? An experienced bridal seamstress’s perspective on fitting timelines, natural body changes and achieving a beautiful wedding-day fit.
When to start wedding dress alterations & Why Timing Matters in Bridal Alterations
One of the questions I am frequently asked is, “When should I start my wedding dress alterations?”
With over two decades of experience in specialist bridal alterations, I generally recommend beginning the actual alterations approximately four to five weeks before your wedding day.
This isn’t because alterations cannot be completed earlier. In fact, I regularly accommodate brides who prefer to have their gowns altered several months in advance.
My recommendation comes from years of working closely with brides and understanding how even subtle changes in body measurements can affect the fit of a carefully constructed wedding gown.
And importantly, you are always welcome to reserve your bridal fitting appointments months in advance.
Your Body May Change Before Your Wedding — Even Without Trying
The months leading up to a wedding can bring changes to everyday routines.
Some brides begin exercising more regularly, adopt healthier eating habits or gradually lose weight. Others experience natural fluctuations in their measurements without making any deliberate lifestyle changes.
Even when your weight remains relatively stable, your body shape and proportions may change.
A gown that fits beautifully in January may not fit quite the same way in June.
This is particularly important with fitted bridal gowns, where small differences around the bust, waist, hips or shoulders can influence how the dress sits, supports and moves with your body.
I have always believed that your wedding dress should be altered to fit you beautifully, rather than expecting you to change your body to fit your wedding dress.
Why I Prefer Not to Alter a Wedding Dress Too Early
Wedding gowns are often far more complex than they appear.
Beneath the beautiful outer fabrics may be several layers of lining, intricate internal construction, boning, delicate lace, carefully positioned appliqués and precisely shaped seams.
When substantial alterations are completed several months before the wedding, even a modest change in measurements may mean that some of that work needs to be revisited.
This can involve additional fittings, further adjustments and avoidable expense.
By beginning alterations closer to your wedding, I can work with your more recent measurements and concentrate on achieving the most balanced, flattering and comfortable fit possible.
For me, it isn’t about leaving alterations until the last minute. It’s about choosing the most appropriate time to carry them out.
Is Four to Five Weeks Really Enough Time?
For most bridal gowns, four to five weeks is a carefully planned and practical timeframe when appointments have been arranged in advance.
At my private bridal alterations studio in Sutton, Surrey, I undertake everything from delicate refinements to extensive structural alterations.
These may include reshaping and resizing bodices, reducing or increasing bust support, adjusting shoulder lines, altering sleeves, shortening multiple skirt layers, repositioning lace and creating beautifully balanced bustles.
Each wedding dress is individually assessed, and the fittings are organised around the work required.
More complex gowns, substantial redesigns or particular wedding arrangements may need additional time.
The key is to book your appointments early, even when the alterations themselves are scheduled closer to the wedding.
What If I Want to Plan Several Months in Advance?
I completely understand that some brides prefer to have everything organised well ahead of their special day.
For this reason, I offer a 45-minute Pre-Fit Consultation for £40, which can take place several months before your wedding, as soon as your dress is with you.
Perhaps the question I am asked most often is, “How much will my wedding dress alterations cost?”
Every gown is different, and photographs alone cannot reveal the internal construction, fabric layers, finishing techniques or alterations required.
During your pre-fit consultation, I professionally pin and assess your gown on you, discuss the work involved and provide a written, itemised estimate.
Of the £40 consultation fee, £20 is credited towards your alterations or dress storage if your gown is left with me. The consultation fee is non-refundable.
This gives you the opportunity to understand the work and anticipated costs well before your recommended alteration schedule begins.
For weddings less than a month away, a separate pre-fit consultation may not be possible because of time constraints.
Can I Have My Wedding Dress Altered Much Earlier?
Absolutely. My four-to-five-week recommendation is a preference, not a restriction.
I have welcomed brides as early as January for weddings taking place in June or July.
For these brides, I arranged their alterations using my usual four-week fitting schedule, completed the work and obtained their approval of the finished fit.
Professional steam pressing was then arranged closer to their wedding dates.
When alterations are completed this far in advance, I also arrange an additional provisional fitting approximately four weeks before the wedding.
This fitting costs £20 and allows me to reassess how the gown fits closer to the special day.
If the fit remains beautiful, we can proceed with the finishing arrangements.
If measurements have changed and further alterations are needed, these are discussed and charged separately, with all costs explained transparently. A final retry is then arranged before the professional steam press.
This gives brides who prefer earlier alterations the flexibility they need, without overlooking the possibility of natural body changes before their wedding.
When to start wedding dress alterations during Pregnancy & Why I Recommend Fittings even Closer to Your Wedding Day in these circumstances?
For brides who are pregnant, I generally recommend beginning wedding dress alterations approximately three weeks before the wedding, as body measurements can change more rapidly during pregnancy, particularly around the bust, waist and growing bump. Depending on the gown and the stage of pregnancy, I may arrange a follow-up fitting just one week later to reassess the fit and make any necessary refinements. This allows me to work with your most recent measurements while ensuring your wedding dress is completed comfortably in advance of your special day, rather than leaving alterations until the very last minute. Every pregnancy and every wedding gown is different, so I carefully plan each fitting schedule individually, with particular attention to comfort, support and allowing room for natural changes in your body.
When to start wedding dress alterations? Book Early, Alter at the Right Time
There is an important difference between booking your bridal alterations early and actually beginning the alterations early.
I encourage brides to secure their appointments well in advance, particularly during the busy wedding season.
Whether you prefer my recommended fitting schedule, an earlier pre-fit consultation or to have your alterations completed several months ahead, I am happy to discuss the most suitable arrangements for your gown and wedding date.
My Philosophy: A Wedding Dress Should Fit the Bride
Since 2003, I have had the privilege of working with brides wearing gowns of every imaginable design, construction and silhouette.
Every bride is different, every gown presents its own challenges, and no two fitting experiences are quite the same.
My approach has always been guided by careful craftsmanship, honest professional advice and the desire to avoid unnecessary alterations wherever possible.
The four-to-five-week recommendation is simply one part of that philosophy.
Because ultimately, the most important fit isn’t how your wedding dress looks six months before your wedding.
It’s how beautifully it fits when your special day arrives.
