Raynes Park Wedding Dress Alterations | Essense of Australia Bridal Expert
When this bride travelled from Raynes Park to my private bridal alterations studio in Sutton, she brought with her a beautiful Essense of Australia D3763 wedding dress, purchased from Outlet by Aurora in Cheam Village.
There was also a lovely connection behind her referral. Before opening my own private studio, I worked for seven years at Aurora Bride’s main boutique in North Cheam, gaining extensive experience fitting and altering bridal gowns. I am now one of the seamstresses recommended by Outlet by Aurora, which is how this bride came to me for her wedding dress alterations.
She had originally purchased the gown in a size 14, but by the time we began her fittings she was closer to a size 8–10. Bridal sizing varies considerably between designers, so I always work from the bride’s actual measurements rather than the number on the label. In this case, the change meant the gown required a substantial amount of reshaping to achieve the close, elegant silhouette intended by the original design.
This was much more than a straightforward wedding dress take-in. The gown needed to be reduced by approximately 12 cm through the fitted body, then carefully tapered and rebalanced through the hips, underneath the seat and down towards the knee.
Raynes Park Wedding Dress Alterations | A Major 12 cm Wedding Dress Size Reduction
The main alteration was taking the dress in by approximately 12 cm throughout the fitted section of the gown.
With such a significant reduction, simply removing fabric at one seam would not have created the right result. The whole shape of the dress needed to be considered so that the bodice, waist, hips and skirt continued to flow smoothly together.
I carefully reduced and reshaped the gown to follow the bride’s new measurements while preserving the clean lines and proportions of the Essense of Australia design.
The fitting photographs show just how much excess fabric needed to be controlled before the final silhouette could be established.
Raynes Park Wedding Dress Alterations | Reshaping Through the Low Hip, Under the Seat and Below the Knee
Once the overall size reduction had been established, I concentrated on the shape through the lower body.
The gown was tapered from the low hip, underneath the seat and all the way down to below the knee.
This type of shaping is particularly important on a fitted wedding dress. If too much fabric remains through the back hip or underneath the seat, the gown can lose the sculpted line that gives this style its elegance.
By gradually tapering the dress rather than taking too much from one area, I was able to create a much smoother fit through the bride’s figure while still allowing the skirt to open naturally below the knee and flow into the train.
The finished wedding photographs show the difference beautifully: the dress follows her shape without looking tight or over-altered.
Raynes Park Wedding Dress Alterations | Altering the Bodice, Straps and Bust Fit
The upper body also needed to be reassessed once the dress had been reduced.
I shortened the straps, added cups and created additional over- and under-bust contouring to improve the support and shape of the bodice.
These alterations all work together. Changing the circumference of a fitted wedding dress affects the position of the neckline, bust and straps, so each area needs to be checked again as the fitting progresses.
The aim was to give the bride more support while keeping the beautiful plunging neckline and delicate detailing looking completely natural.
Shortening the Wedding Dress
The gown also required hem shortening.
Wedding dress hems are always fitted with the bride’s finished shoes wherever possible so that the dress sits at the correct length for walking while still retaining the intended floor-length appearance.
After the substantial body alterations had been completed, the hem was adjusted to balance correctly with the newly fitted silhouette.
I also fitted Mums Veni Infantino Mother of the Bride dress. I was honoured that she travelled all the way from Salisbury to be fitted at my Sutton Studio.
Adding a Wedding Dress Bustle
A bustle was also added to the train so that the bride could lift it for the reception.
The train is an important part of the look during the ceremony and photographs, but later in the day a bustle allows the bride to move and dance much more easily without having to carry the train.
The bustle was positioned specifically for the shape and weight of this gown so that, once lifted, the back of the dress still looked balanced.
From a Size 14 Gown to a Completely Re-Fitted Dress
The bride had originally bought her gown in a size 14 and was closer to a size 8–10 when she came to me.
Rather than thinking of the alteration as simply changing one dress size into another, I approached it as a complete re-fitting of the gown to her individual figure.
For this Essense of Australia D3763, the alterations included:
- Approximately 12 cm taken in through the fitted body
- Additional tapering from the low hip, underneath the seat and down to below the knee
- Strap shortening
- Cups added
- Over- and under-bust contouring
- Wedding dress hem shortening
- A bustle for the train
- Repaired and replaced all missing pearls on the dress
Despite the amount of work involved, the finished dress still needed to look effortless — as though it had always been made to fit her this way.
Seeing the Finished Dress on the Wedding Day
One of my favourite parts of bridal alterations is seeing the wedding photographs afterwards.
The finished photographs from this bride’s wedding in Devon show how beautifully the gown eventually sat through the bodice, waist and hips. The fitted silhouette is clean and smooth, while the train retains all the drama of the original design.
It is particularly satisfying with a transformation like this because the finished result gives very little indication of just how substantial the alterations actually were.
