How Much Do Wedding Dress Alterations Cost? A Complete Bridal Alteration Price Guide
Wedding dress alterations cost is one of the most common questions brides ask when planning their wedding. After choosing the perfect gown, many brides are unsure how much they should budget for achieving the ideal fit.
All prices are a guide only. Every wedding dress is individually assessed. Your final quotation will depend on the gown’s construction, fabric, layers, lace, beading and the level of craftsmanship required.
The answer depends on the construction of the dress, the fabrics used, the number of layers, the amount of detailing and the level of craftsmanship required.
A simple adjustment on a minimal gown is very different from altering a heavily structured designer wedding dress with lace, beading, a long train or intricate internal support.
At my Surrey bridal atelier, every wedding dress is individually assessed to understand the alterations required and create a tailored plan to ensure the gown fits beautifully and feels secure for the wedding day.
What Affects the Cost of Wedding Dress Alterations?

Wedding dresses are not made like everyday garments. Many gowns include multiple layers, delicate fabrics and specialist construction techniques.
Factors that influence the cost include:
- The number of layers in the skirt
- Lace, beading or crystal embellishment
- Corsetry and internal structure
- The amount of reshaping required
- Designer construction techniques
- Train length and bustle requirements
- Bespoke changes requested by the bride
A professional bridal alteration specialist considers not only the fit, but also how the original design and proportions of the gown can be preserved.
Wedding dress alterations cost | Why a Pre-Fit Consultation Is Essential?
The question I am asked most often by brides is: “How much will my wedding dress alterations cost?”
Because every wedding dress is unique, it is not possible to provide an accurate quotation without seeing the gown on you. Photographs cannot show the internal construction, layers, lace, beading, finishes or how the dress fits your individual shape.
A Pre-Fit Consultation allows your gown to be professionally assessed, pinned and discussed in detail before any alterations begin.
During your 45-minute consultation, I will assess your dress, discuss your requirements and provide a written, itemised estimate for the alterations recommended.
The consultation fee is £40, with £20 credited towards your alterations or dress storage if your gown is left with me. The consultation fee is non-refundable.
A Pre-Fit Consultation can take place several months before your wedding once your dress has arrived, giving you complete clarity on the work required and your alteration investment.

How Much Should You Budget for Wedding Dress Alterations?
While every wedding dress is unique, most bridal alteration packages typically range from £300–£600, depending on the complexity of the gown and the work required to achieve the perfect fit.
For many brides, this includes a combination of essential alterations such as adjusting the fit of the bodice, refining the silhouette, shortening the gown, adding support and creating a secure bustle.
With professional steaming and final wedding-day preparation included, many complete alteration packages may reach £700 or more.
For gowns requiring bespoke additions, couture changes or detailed hand-finishing, such as lace appliqué, sleeve creation, neckline redesign, internal corsetry, beading adjustments or complete wedding dress transformations, the investment will reflect the additional craftsmanship and time involved.
A wedding dress alteration is not simply about shortening fabric or taking in seams. It is about preserving the beauty of the original design while creating a bespoke fit that allows every bride to feel confident, comfortable and completely herself on her wedding day.
