What Should You Budget for Wedding Dress Alterations?
All prices explained below are a guide only. Every wedding dress is individually assessed, and your quotation will reflect its construction, fabric, layers, lace, beading and the work required. Simpler gowns or smaller adjustments may cost less than the guide prices shown.
I do not offer fixed-price alteration packages, as each bride’s dress and requirements are different. Instead, each alteration is priced individually, so your costs reflect the work your gown needs.
As a general budgeting guide, most bridal alterations total £300–£600. Straightforward work may cost less, while complex alterations, bespoke additions and extensive hand-finishing may cost considerably more. You will receive a written, fully itemised estimate at the end of your pre-fit consultation or first fitting, allowing you to review the proposed work and costs before proceeding.

Wedding dress alterations cost | Why a Pre-Fit Consultation Is Essential?
The question I am asked most often by brides is: “How much will my wedding dress alterations cost?”
Because every wedding dress is unique, it is not possible to provide an accurate quotation without seeing the gown on you. Photographs cannot show the internal construction, layers, lace, beading, finishes or how the dress fits your individual shape.
A Pre-Fit Consultation allows your gown to be professionally assessed, pinned and discussed in detail before any alterations begin.
During your 45-minute consultation, I will assess your dress, discuss your requirements and provide a written, itemised estimate for the alterations recommended.
The consultation fee is £40, with £20 credited towards your alterations or dress storage of £40 if your gown is left with me. The consultation fee is non-refundable.
A Pre-Fit Consultation can take place several months before your wedding once your dress has arrived, giving you complete clarity on the work required and your alteration investment.
Cup addition, Cup Reduction and Cup Replacement
Adding bust cups — from £30
Cups can be added to your dress for additional shaping and support. The cost depends on the work required and how the cups are fitted within the bodice.
Replacing existing bust cups — from £60
If the cups are integral to the bodice’s design and construction, the cost may be substantially higher due to the work involved. The final cost is confirmed after assessing your dress.
Bust cup reduction and reshaping — from £100
This involves reducing the size of the bust area within the bodice for a closer fit. Depending on the design, this may require carefully lifting lace, adjusting the underlying layers and reapplying beadwork. The final cost is confirmed after assessing your dress.

Suitable for simpler gowns with fewer layers and minimal detailing. Some particularly straightforward dresses may cost less to shorten, and I adjust my charges to reflect the work required. £150 is a budgeting guide, not a minimum charge. Your individual estimate is provided after assessing your dress.
Multi-Layer Wedding Dress Hem
From £150–£250
Many wedding dresses contain several layers including:
- satin
- lining
- tulle
- crinoline
- horse hair crin
- underskirts
Each layer needs to be adjusted carefully so the gown maintains its original movement and shape. The fact that many gowns have multiple hems with multiple finishes also determines the overall cost of your bridal hem .
Lace Wedding Dress Hem Reconstruction
From £200–£400+
Lace hems require specialist care. The lace may need to be carefully removed, the dress shortened and the lace repositioned by hand to recreate the original finish. The variability in cost reflects if the dress is a fitted silhouette or a ballgown snd number of layers involved.

Heavily detailed gowns with beads, sequins or crystals require additional time and precision to preserve the original craftsmanship. The cost depends on the complexity of the beadwork, the width of the front hem requiring careful unpicking and reattachment at the new length, and the number and finish of the layers underneath that also need shortening.
