Gemma’s PDR Bridal Lena gown featured beautiful floral appliqués, soft layers and a romantic silhouette. Although the dress fitted reasonably well overall, the proportions through the bodice and waist were not sitting correctly against her frame.
The most significant alteration involved shortening the front waist length of the dress.
Unlike a standard adjustment, this required complete separation of the bodice from the skirt at the front of the gown. Excess length was carefully removed before the dress was reconstructed and rebalanced to achieve the correct proportions.
This type of bridal alteration requires a detailed understanding of garment balance, construction and silhouette, ensuring the original design remains intact while creating a fit that feels completely natural on the bride.

The alterations carried out on the gown included:
- Complete front waist shortening through separation and reconstruction
- Bodice contouring and fitting adjustments
- Rebalancing of the gown’s proportions
- Three-point bustle creation
- Final fitting and steam preparation
By the final fitting, the gown sat correctly through the waist and torso while retaining the elegance and softness of the original PDR Bridal design.
A Personal Tribute Sewn Into The Wedding Dress
One of the most meaningful elements of this bridal alteration was incorporating a sentimental keepsake into the gown.
The bride’s late grandfather’s handkerchief was carefully secured inside the bodice area over her heart , allowing her to carry a personal reminder of him with her throughout the wedding day.
These small personal details often become some of the most treasured parts of a wedding dress and it was a privilege to help incorporate such an important family memory into the gown.

To ensure the bride could move comfortably between the ceremony and reception, I also created a discreet three-point bustle.
The bustle was designed to support the train while maintaining the natural drape and movement of the skirt, allowing the dress to transition beautifully from formal photographs to evening celebrations.
Bridal Party Alterations
The alterations extended beyond the wedding gown itself, with work also carried out on two bridesmaids’ dresses before the wedding.
One of the bridesmaids travelled from Woking requiring significant alterations to her dress. The garment required far more than a simple adjustment, with multiple areas needing attention before it was ready for the wedding day.
The straps were reconstructed, the back panel was adjusted, lingerie retainers and bra clips were replaced, and the hem required complete rebalancing to achieve an even finish.
Due to inconsistencies in the hemline length, specialist steam-stretching techniques were also used through the front of the dress before the hem was carefully relevelled throughout the skirt to restore the correct proportions and ensure it hung evenly from all angles.
A second bridesmaid’s dress required shortening of the straps together with a complete rehem of a two-layer circular skirt. Circular hems require careful levelling throughout the full circumference of the garment to ensure both layers hang evenly and move correctly when worn.
The completed alterations ensured both bridesmaids’ dresses complemented the bridal party beautifully and were ready in time for the wedding celebrations.
