Élysée Bridal Alterations | Destination Wedding Dress Transformation
A destination wedding often requires more than simply finding the perfect dress. It requires careful planning, expert fitting and the confidence that every element of the gown will perform beautifully from the ceremony through to the final dance. This Élysée Bridal Florentina alterations project began when a bride travelled from Norbury to my Sutton Surrey studio ahead of her destination wedding in Jamaica. The Florentina gown is one of Élysée Bridal’s most distinctive designs, combining a sleek sculpted silhouette with a dramatic detachable floral overskirt that creates two completely different bridal looks within a single gown.
Preparing this dress for a tropical destination wedding required far more than standard alterations. The gown needed structural support, precise fitting and careful balancing of the detachable overskirt to ensure both components worked seamlessly together.
About the Élysée Bridal Florentina Gown
The Florentina gown features a clean, elegant silhouette with soft draping through the bodice and a flattering fitted skirt. What makes the design truly distinctive is the dramatic detachable floral overskirt adorned with oversized sculptural flowers, creating a striking couture-inspired transformation.
The bride could enjoy a sleek fitted gown for part of the day while also benefiting from the drama and impact of a statement overskirt during key moments of the wedding celebration.
As with many modern bridal designs, the success of the gown relies heavily on precise fit and internal structure.
Hidden Internal Corsetry for Support and Confidence
One of the most important elements of this project was the addition of a hidden internal bust corset.
Many brides assume that a strapless gown will automatically provide sufficient support. In reality, the foundation hidden beneath the dress is often what determines how comfortable and secure a bride feels throughout the wedding day.
The internal corsetry provided:
- Additional bust support
- Improved stability through the bodice
- Better weight distributio
- Greater comfort throughout the day
- Enhanced confidence when moving, walking and dancing
The result was a secure and beautifully sculpted silhouette without compromising the clean lines of the original design.
Hemming the Florentina Gown
As with most bridal alterations, the hem required careful adjustment to achieve the perfect length.
Destination weddings present additional considerations because brides often walk across different surfaces throughout the day. The gown needed to skim the floor elegantly while remaining practical and comfortable.
The hem was adjusted to ensure the bride could move naturally while preserving the balance and proportions of the original Élysée Bridal design.
Sculpting the Florentina Silhouette
While the dramatic detachable floral overskirt created an extraordinary statement, achieving the perfect balance beneath it required careful couture fitting. The bride wanted greater definition through her hips and a more sculpted silhouette, so the gown was carefully contoured from beneath the seat through to the knee. This refinement enhanced her natural curves and created a more pronounced hourglass shape while preserving the clean elegance of the original Élysée Bridal Florentina design. The result was a beautifully balanced silhouette that complemented both the sleek fitted gown and the dramatic floral overskirt, ensuring the dress looked exceptional from every angle throughout her destination wedding in Jamaica
Creating a Bustle for the Reception
A bustle was added to allow the bride to manage the train comfortably during the reception.
Bustles are one of the most important yet often overlooked bridal alterations. Without one, a bride can spend much of the evening carrying her train or worrying about guests stepping on it.
The bustle transformed the gown from ceremony mode to reception mode while maintaining the elegance of the silhouette.
Balancing the Detachable Floral Overskirt
The most distinctive part of this project was fitting and balancing the detachable floral overskirt.
The oversized floral detailing creates extraordinary visual impact but also introduces additional weight and movement considerations. Careful fitting was required to ensure the overskirt attached correctly and worked harmoniously with the gown beneath.
The attachment points were assessed and adjusted to ensure:
- Smooth positioning of the overskirt
- Balanced weight distribution
- Secure attachment throughout the day
- Comfortable wear in a warm climate
- A seamless transition between both bridal looks
The finished result allowed the bride to enjoy the dramatic couture appearance of the floral overskirt while maintaining the elegance and simplicity of the fitted Florentina gown underneath.
From Norbury to Jamaica
This bride travelled from Norbury to my Sutton Surrey studio throughout the alterations process before taking her gown overseas for her Jamaican wedding.
