Catherine Deane Bridal Alterations for a South Croydon Bride | Three Wedding Looks, One Perfect Fit

Three looks for one South Croydon bride Avalon Bow dress by Catherine Deane completely restructured by multiple down sizing through couture alterations process

Three Catherine Deane Outfits, Individually Tailored for One Wedding

When Gemma, a personal trainer from South Croydon, visited my Sutton, Surrey studio, she brought three Catherine Deane designs for her wedding celebrations. Her Catherine Deane Bridal Alterations were extensive as she had a stunning hour glass figure with a shorter waist. Even having ordered the three to het closest measurements still required bespoke adjustments done for a picture perfect look throughout the day.

Each outfit had been carefully chosen for a different part of the wedding, creating a complete Catherine Deane bridal wardrobe. While the designs were beautiful, achieving the perfect fit required extensive alterations across all three garments.

As a personal trainer with a naturally athletic yet distinctly hourglass figure, Gemma often encountered the challenge many brides face when purchasing occasionwear and bridal garments. Sizing that accommodates one area of the body frequently creates excess fabric elsewhere, meaning significant contouring and restructuring are often needed to achieve a truly balanced fit.

From a contemporary bridal jumpsuit to a dramatic Avalon dress and a delicate lace Avory mini dress, each garment required specialist bridal alterations to ensure it complemented Gemma’s shape perfectly.

Catherine Deane Bridal Jumpsuit Ryo with Itala top Alterations

The first outfit was a sophisticated Catherine Deane bridal jumpsuit Ryo featuring a structured bodice, wide-leg trousers and elegant minimalist styling. She wore the Itala top over it which was a perfect fit and needed no alterations.

Although the Catherine Deane Ryo Jumpsuit fitted reasonably well through the bust, the proportions through the waist and torso were not suited to Gemma’s frame. With a naturally defined waist, fuller hip proportions and a shorter waist-to-nape measurement, the original placement of the waistband sat significantly lower than it should have, disrupting the balance of the design.

Reconstructing the Waist and Bodice

bodice was shortened separated and restitched completely to fit the brides hour glass figure

To achieve the clean, elongated silhouette the jumpsuit was intended to create, substantial reconstruction was required. The waistband was completely separated from the garment and the bodice was shortened through the torso to bring the garment back into proportion with Gemma’s frame. Once the excess length had been removed, the waistband was carefully repositioned and reconstructed at the correct height to align with her natural waist.

The zip was also removed and reattached as part of the alteration process, allowing the upper body and waistline to be reshaped correctly. This structural alteration completely transformed how the jumpsuit sat on the body, creating a more balanced silhouette through the waist, hips and leg line while preserving the elegant simplicity of the original Catherine Deane design

Trouser Alterations and Finishing

Once the bodice proportions had been corrected, the trousers were fully tapered through the leg to create a cleaner silhouette and improve overall balance. As the trousers were fully lined, alterations were carried out to both the outer fabric and lining layers, with each layer subsequently re-hemmed to the required finished length..

Although visually understated, this level of alteration requires significant pattern balancing and reconstruction to ensure the garment continues to hang correctly after adjustment.

Catherine Deane Avalon Dress Alterations

The second outfit was the stunning Catherine Deane Avalon dress, featuring a dramatic oversized bow and elegant train detail. While the dress was visually striking, substantial alterations were required throughout the bodice, waist and overall proportions to achieve the correct fit.

Multiple Size Reduction and Bodice Reshaping

The Avalon dress required significant size reduction throughout the bodice and waist. The neckline was reshaped and refined to improve support and balance, while maintaining the clean architectural lines that make the design so distinctive.

The statement bow detail also required considerable adjustment. The proportions of the bow and its trailing lengths were refined to better complement Gemma’s frame and create a more balanced silhouette.

As the alterations progressed, the amount of reconstruction involved became so extensive that Gemma herself remarked that the dress felt almost completely remade.

This is often the reality of specialist bridal alterations. While the finished result should look effortless, achieving that outcome frequently requires substantial structural work hidden beneath the surface.

Catherine Deane Avory Lace Mini Dress Alterations

The third Catherine Deane outfit was a beautiful lace mini dress featuring delicate lace detailing and a corset-inspired back. Although this garment required less reconstruction than the previous two pieces, it still required extensive fitting work to achieve the correct shape and support. Inner cups and support was added for the additional comfort of the bride.

Contouring and Waist Reshaping

The dress required approximately two sizes to be removed through the waist while maintaining the integrity of the lace design and overall balance of the garment.

Alterations included:

  • Significant waist reduction.
  • Under-bust contouring for improved support and shape.
  • Refinement and reconstruction of the waistband detail.
  • Bodice reshaping.
  • Addition of cups
  • Proportion balancing throughout the garment.

The result was a secure, flattering fit that enhanced Gemma’s natural shape while preserving the delicate character of the original Catherine Deane design.

Three Catherine Deane Looks, One Perfectly Fitted Bridal Wardrobe

Working on three Catherine Deane garments for the same bride was a particularly rewarding project. Each outfit presented its own fitting challenges, yet all three required specialist bridal alteration techniques to achieve the perfect result.

From major garment reconstruction and structural alterations to detailed contouring and silhouette refinement, every piece was individually tailored to Gemma’s proportions.

As a personal trainer, Gemma was particularly aware of posture, fit and silhouette. The goal throughout the alterations process was to celebrate her natural shape while ensuring each garment felt secure, comfortable and beautifully balanced throughout the wedding celebrations.

This project perfectly demonstrates the difference between simply altering a garment and truly tailoring it to the individual wearer.

Whether working on a bridal jumpsuit, a statement reception dress or a delicate lace design, my aim is always the same: creating a fit that feels effortless, comfortable and completely personal to the bride.

This wedding project extended beyond the bride’s Catherine Deane wardrobe. Gemma’s mother also entrusted me with alterations to several designer occasionwear outfits, including Nadine Merabi two piece requiring extensive fitting and reshaping to achieve the perfect silhouette.

From heavily embellished occasionwear to structured separates and jumpsuits, each garment required specialist tailoring to ensure a comfortable and flattering fit for the celebrations.

Four Garments Prepared for the Wedding

By the end of the alterations process, Gemma’s three Catherine Deane wedding outfits and a navy bridesmaid dress had all been completed, professionally steam pressed and prepared for collection.

Seeing the garments hanging together highlighted the scale of the project. Each Catherine Deane design had required a different approach to fitting, contouring and reconstruction, while the bridesmaid dress also received alterations to ensure a polished and comfortable fit for the wedding celebrations.

From the reconstructed bridal jumpsuit and extensively altered Avalon dress to the lace mini dress and bridesmaid gown, every garment had been individually tailored before being carefully steam pressed and prepared for the big day.
