Bridal Alterations in Chislehurst – A Complete Bodice Redesign with Irish Lace
This Chislehurst bridal alterations project began with a gown sourced from a boutique in Chislehurst. The bride came to me through recommendation, originally looking to create a fully bespoke wedding dress
Like many brides, she had a clear vision — but also a defined budget.
Rather than compromising on the outcome, I guided her towards a different approach: selecting a well-constructed gown and transforming it through couture-level alterations. She got her dress upon my recommendation from a boutique I used to Collaborate with in Chislehurst.

She chose a beautiful Stella York dress which I had guided her to get as the foundation.
From there, the real work began.
Bridal Alterations Chislehurst
Transforming a Sweetheart Neckline into a Modest Bridal Design

The original gown featured a classic sweetheart neckline with a Bardot-style collar — elegant, but not aligned with the bride’s personal or religious preferences.
As she wanted a design that offered full coverage, without compromising on beauty or refinement.
This required a complete rethink of the upper structure of the dress.
I removed the Bardot collar entirely and began rebuilding the bodice from the base structure upward.
A discreet modesty panel was introduced at the front, softening the neckline and eliminating exposed cleavage while maintaining a natural, balanced line across the bust.

The goal was never to “cover” — but to redesign with intention.
Rebuilding the Bodice with Irish Lace
To achieve this, I sourced intricate Irish lace that would allow the new design to feel seamless and authentic to the gown.
The lace was carefully engineered across the bodice, shoulders, and sleeves to create a refined illusion effect — offering coverage while still allowing lightness and detail to come through.
This stage requires precision.
Every motif had to be placed with consideration to symmetry, proportion, and how the eye travels across the garment. The lace cannot feel added — it must feel as though it has always belonged to the dress.
Structural Alterations and Couture Finishing
Beyond the visible redesign, the internal structure of the gown was also refined.
The dress was taken in to achieve a precise fit, ensuring the new bodice sat correctly against the body without tension or distortion.

Bespoke buttons were added along the back, elevating the finish and reinforcing the couture feel of the transformation.
These details are subtle — but they are what distinguish a standard alteration from a considered redesign.
From Off-the-Rack to Fully Personalised
What began as an off-the-rack gown became something entirely individual.
This is often the most powerful approach for brides working within a budget — choosing a strong base dress, then reshaping it through expert alteration and design.
It allows for complete personalisation, without the cost of building a gown entirely from scratch.
