Julia Kontogruni Bridal Alterations | Couture Wedding Dress Transformation
Every designer creates wedding dresses with their own signature style, construction techniques and silhouette. Julia Kontogruni bridal alterations require a thorough understanding of couture dressmaking to preserve the elegance of the original design while achieving a flawless fit.
This beautiful Julia Kontogruni wedding dress arrived at my Sutton, Surrey studio after being purchased from a sample sale. Although it was the correct size, the bodice still required precise contouring through the bust and waist to achieve the sculpted fit every bride dreams of.
What appeared to be a routine fitting soon became one of the most technically demanding wedding dress alterations I have ever undertaken.
Altering One of the Largest Wedding Dresses I Have Ever Worked On
The gown featured an enormous princess skirt with a dramatic two-metre train, more than fifteen internal layers and three large metal hoops supporting its spectacular silhouette.
Even after many years specialising in couture bridal alterations, I remember telling my bride that it was the biggest wedding dress I had ever worked on.
Once the hoops and underskirt were removed for alteration, the sheer volume of fabric became apparent. Every adjustment had to preserve the balance, movement and proportions of the original Julia Kontogruni design.
Julia Kontogruni Bridal Alterations | Precision Bodice Fitting
Although the gown was the correct size, every bride deserves a wedding dress that feels as though it was made exclusively for her.
The bodice was carefully reshaped through the bust and waist to create a beautifully contoured silhouette while maintaining the integrity of the original construction.
These subtle structural alterations transformed the overall appearance of the gown without compromising its luxurious design.
Creating Two Wedding Looks From One Julia Kontogruni Gown
One of my bride’s dreams was to enjoy two completely different bridal looks without purchasing a second dress.
Rather than simply adding a standard bustle, I designed and constructed a bespoke couture bustle system using over fifty individual bustle points throughout the skirt.
The transformation was remarkable.
For the ceremony, the gown retained its magnificent princess silhouette with its dramatic train flowing behind.
For the evening reception, the skirt transformed into a relaxed, softly draped silhouette that allowed complete freedom for walking, sitting and dancing while looking like an entirely different wedding dress.
Even the groom believed his bride had changed into another gown.
Julia Kontogruni Bridal Alterations | A Couture 50-Point Bustle
Every bustle I create is individually designed around the dress itself.
This Julia Kontogruni gown required considerably more than a traditional bustle because of its extraordinary volume and weight.
Over fifty carefully positioned bustle points were engineered throughout the skirt to distribute the fabric evenly, creating movement without bulk and preserving the elegance of the design from every angle.
The finished result was both beautiful and practical—a true couture engineering project hidden within the dress.

The Bride’s Kind Words
“I had the pleasure of working with this talented lady, and I’m so happy to have found her.
I bought a designer dress from a sample sale and, even though it was the right size, it needed to be tailored around the bust and waist to fit like a glove. That was the relatively straightforward part of the process.
Where the alterations became complicated—and definitely not for the faint-hearted—was the sheer volume of the skirt. It had a two-metre train, over 15 underlayers and three metal hoops. Even Zen said it was the biggest dress she had ever worked on.
Once the massive underskirt and hoops came out, there was so much fabric to bustle up to make the dress suitable for sitting down and dancing. It was a challenge, to say the least, but Zen filled me with confidence and suggested ways to achieve exactly the look I wanted.
We transformed a huge princess gown for the ceremony into a fun, bohemian-inspired evening dress. Zen created over 50 bustle points all around the skirt to achieve the look. It ended up feeling like a completely new couture dress when she had finished.
On our wedding day, even my husband thought there were two different dresses, even though I’d told him all along that my dress ‘transforms’.
