Uxbridge Bridal Alterations | WED2B Jules Wedding Dress Completely Transformed
This beautiful bride travelled from Uxbridge to my private bridal alterations studio in Sutton with a WED2B Jules wedding dress and a wonderful vision for a completely different bridal look.
The original gown had a dramatic princess silhouette, a structured corset bodice and a full Mikado skirt. However, the bride wanted her dress to feel more romantic, decorative and individual.
This Uxbridge bridal alterations project went far beyond simply adjusting the size or shortening the hem. The original minimalist gown was completely transformed with carefully positioned floral lace, a supportive inner corset, additional bust support and a beautifully detailed lace-edged train.
A three-point American bustle was also created so the bride could lift the train securely for her wedding reception.
The final result was a one-of-a-kind gown that retained the beautiful structure of the original WED2B design while looking richly detailed and completely personal to the bride.
Uxbridge Bridal Alterations | The Original WED2B Jules Wedding Dress
The Jules wedding dress by Sofia Cruz for WED2B is a striking Mikado ballgown with a strapless sweetheart bodice, dropped basque waist, full gathered skirt, buttoned back and pockets.
Its original design is intentionally clean and minimalist. The exposed corset construction creates a modern bridal look, while the structured waist and voluminous skirt provide the drama of a traditional princess wedding dress.
The bride loved the strong shape of the gown but wanted to introduce floral lace and a softer, more romantic finish.
The existing dress provided an excellent foundation for the transformation. The challenge was to add a substantial amount of lace without concealing the beautiful dropped waist or making the Mikado skirt appear heavy.
Uxbridge Bridal Alterations | Transforming the Plain Corset with Floral Lace
The most dramatic part of these Uxbridge bridal alterations was the complete redesign of the original bodice.
Floral lace appliqués were individually arranged over the plain corset panels, changing the appearance of the bodice while preserving its sculpted construction underneath.
The lace had to be positioned carefully around:
- The sweetheart neckline
- The bust and corset seams
- The dropped basque waist
- The side panels
- The centre-back fastening
The motifs were selected and placed to complement the bride’s shape and the lines of the dress. Rather than covering the bodice with one uninterrupted piece of lace, individual appliqués were layered and blended to create a more natural couture finish.
The sweetheart neckline was carefully framed with lace, creating a softer and more decorative edge. Additional floral details were then positioned through the front and sides of the bodice to provide depth, texture and balance.
The finished bodice looked as though it had always been created as part of the original gown.
Extending the Lace over the Dropped Waist
Stopping the lace at the waist would have made the decorated bodice appear separate from the clean Mikado skirt.
To connect the two areas, the lace was extended beyond the dropped basque waist and gradually dispersed across the upper part of the skirt.
The floral motifs were carefully placed so that they appeared to grow naturally from the bodice. The lace became lighter as it moved down the skirt, creating a smooth transition between the richly detailed top and the clean fabric below.
This balance was essential. Too much lace would have overwhelmed the structure and sheen of the Mikado, while too little could have made the transformation appear unfinished.
Every motif needed to work with the direction, shape and scale of the gown.
Creating a Beautiful Lace-Edged Train
The lace transformation continued into the back of the dress and around the train.
A decorative lace border was added around the edge, introducing beautiful detail when the train was opened out for the ceremony and wedding photographs.
Further appliqués were positioned above the border so that the lace flowed naturally into the main body of the skirt rather than looking like a separate trim.
The combination of smooth Mikado and intricate floral lace created a striking contrast. When the bride walked, the satin caught the light beautifully while the lace edging gave the train a softer and more romantic appearance.
Adding an Inner Corset and Bust Support
Although the lace created the most visible change, the internal alterations were just as important.
A supportive inner corset was added inside the gown to improve its structure and provide a secure fit through the bust and waist. Additional bust support was also incorporated to enhance the bride’s shape and help the strapless bodice remain comfortably in position.
With a strapless ballgown, the fit through the bodice must support the weight of the entire dress. The bride should not need to keep pulling the neckline up or feel that the gown is slipping as she moves.
The inner corset and bust support were completely hidden inside the finished dress, but they played an essential part in creating its smooth, secure silhouette.
This is one of the advantages of specialist bridal alterations: the internal construction can be adapted to the individual bride rather than relying only on the support originally provided by the dress.
Hemming the WED2B Jules Dress to the Bride’s Length
The full Mikado skirt was hemmed precisely to the bride’s required length and chosen wedding shoes.
Hemming a structured ballgown requires careful measuring and balancing around the entire skirt. The front must sit at a safe and elegant length without disturbing the fullness of the gown or changing how the fabric falls.
The lace detailing and train also had to remain balanced with the new finished length.
Once completed, the skirt skimmed the floor beautifully and allowed the bride to walk comfortably without losing the dramatic princess effect of the original design.
Creating a Three-Point American Bustle
A three-point American bustle was added to lift the train for the reception.
Using three separate attachment points allowed the weight and fullness of the train to be distributed evenly across the back of the skirt. This created a balanced draped effect rather than pulling the entire train towards one central point.
When the bustle was fastened, the train remained elegant and the lace details were still visible. It also gave the bride greater freedom to walk, greet her guests and dance without dragging the train across the floor.
The bustle attachments were positioned discreetly within the gown so that they remained almost invisible while the train was down.
Final Steam Press and Wedding-Day Preparation
After the lacework, structural alterations, hemming and bustle were completed, the gown received a thorough professional steam press.
Mikado is a beautiful fabric, but its smooth surface can show creases from storage and handling. The full skirt and train were carefully steamed so that they could fall cleanly and display both the shape of the dress and the newly added lace.
The bodice and appliqués were also prepared with care to protect the delicate embellishment and preserve the sculpted structure underneath.
The gown was then prepared for collection and transportation, ready for the bride’s wedding day.

The completed alterations and redesign included:
- Hemming the full Mikado skirt to the bride’s length
- Adding a supportive inner corset
- Creating additional bust support
- Transforming the original plain corset with floral lace
- Defining the sweetheart neckline with lace appliqué
- Extending the lace over the dropped basque waist
- Hand-positioning floral motifs across the skirt
- Adding a decorative lace border around the train
- Creating a three-point American bustle
- Professionally steam pressing and preparing the gown
The finished dress was almost unrecognisable from the original minimalist Jules design.
It had become a romantic, couture-style lace ballgown while retaining the dramatic skirt, dropped waist, pockets and strong internal construction that the bride originally loved.
A One-of-a-Kind Wedding Dress for My Uxbridge Bride
Seeing the completed dress in the bride’s wedding photographs was incredibly special.
The fitted lace bodice complemented her beautifully, while the full Mikado skirt created wonderful movement and drama. The lace-edged train looked particularly striking when opened out for the ceremony and photographs.
Most importantly, the finished gown did not look as though lace had simply been added afterwards. Every element was positioned to work with the original construction, creating one cohesive design.
This is exactly what a successful wedding dress transformation should achieve: the gown should still feel beautifully balanced, but it should now reflect the individual bride wearing it.
The Bride’s Wedding-Day Feedback
After the wedding, my bride sent me a lovely WhatsApp message to say that “the dress was a hit.” It was wonderful to hear how much the completely transformed gown was admired and to see her looking so beautiful and confident on her wedding day.
