Bridal Alterations New Malden | Stella York Wedding Dress Transformation
When Katelyn travelled from New Malden to my bridal alterations studio in Sutton, she brought me a beautiful Stella York Rochelle wedding dress that she had purchased as an outlet gown.
The dress was heavily embellished with lace, beadwork and delicate appliqué, with an off-the-shoulder neckline, fitted silhouette and beautiful lace-edged train. It was a gorgeous gown, but at a size 12 it was considerably too large for Katelyn and needed extensive alterations to achieve the close, sculpted fit the design was intended to have.
This became much more than a straightforward wedding dress alteration.
The gown was ultimately transformed from a size 12 to approximately a size 8, requiring around 12 cm of reshaping from the bodice all the way down to below the knee. I also shortened the dress by approximately 13 cm, completely replaced and reduced the bust cups, added a modesty panel, incorporated additional lace coverage at the back and created three bustle points for the train.
After the wedding, Katelyn described the finished gown with the words every bridal seamstress hopes to hear:
“You made my dream dress!”
Taking a Stella York Wedding Dress from a Size 12 to a Size 8
One of the biggest challenges with this Stella York wedding dress alteration was the amount of reduction required.
The gown needed approximately 12 cm taken in, but this couldn’t simply be removed from one small area.
The Rochelle is designed to follow the body closely through the bodice, waist, hips, seat and thigh before releasing into its flared skirt. To preserve that silhouette, the gown needed to be reshaped continuously from the top of the bodice down to below the knee.
This meant carefully working through several different areas of fit while ensuring the dress remained balanced as a whole.
The aim wasn’t simply to make a size 12 dress smaller.
It was to make the gown look as though it had always been made to Katelyn’s proportions.
Stella York Wedding Dress Alterations New Malden | Reshaping the Bodice, Waist, Hips and Below the Knee
With a fitted wedding dress, alterations through the waist alone are rarely enough when a substantial size reduction is required.
If too much fabric remains around the hips, seat or thighs, the gown can lose the elegant fitted-to-flared silhouette that attracted the bride to the design in the first place.
For Katelyn’s dress, the reshaping continued through the:
- bodice
- waist
- hips
- seat
- thighs
- and down to below the knee
The finished wedding photographs show why this was so important.
The gown follows Katelyn’s figure beautifully before flowing naturally into the skirt, giving her the sculpted silhouette of the original Stella York design without looking overly tight or altered.
Stella York Wedding Dress Alterations New Malden | Altering a Heavily Embellished Stella York Wedding Dress
Reducing a wedding dress by several sizes becomes considerably more complex when the gown is covered in lace appliqué, beading and three-dimensional embellishment.
Decorative elements cannot simply be ignored when seams need to move.
The lace and embellishment surrounding the alteration areas had to be handled carefully so the structural changes underneath did not disrupt the appearance of the gown.
This is where bridal alterations become as much about preserving the designer’s original visual balance as changing the measurements.
Katelyn later highlighted this herself in her five-star review, saying that the dress had been taken from a size 12 to a size 8 while “completely maintaining the integrity and beauty of the original dress.”
That was exactly the result I wanted to achieve.
Stella York Wedding Dress Alterations New Malden | Completely Replacing and Reducing the Bust Cups
The original bust cups were also too large for Katelyn’s proportions.
Simply tightening the outer bodice around oversized cups would not have produced the right shape, so I decided that the better solution was to remove the existing cups completely.
They were replaced with smaller, more suitable cups, and the surrounding bust area was then reshaped to work with Katelyn’s body and the newly reduced bodice.
This was particularly detailed work because the bust was covered with intricate lace, beads and appliqué.
Changing the internal structure had to improve the support and contour without disturbing the delicate appearance of the bodice from the outside.
The result was a much more proportionate bust shape and a bodice that sat securely and naturally against Katelyn’s figure.
Stella York Wedding Dress Alterations New Malden | Adding a Modesty Panel to the Plunge Neckline
The Stella York Rochelle features a dramatic plunging neckline.
For Katelyn, I added a carefully fitted modesty panel to provide a little more coverage while retaining the beautiful deep-V shape of the original gown.
With this kind of alteration, I don’t want the added section to dominate the neckline or make it appear that the dress has simply been covered over.
The objective is to give the bride the coverage and security she wants while preserving the character of the original design.
Once completed, the plunge still remained a beautiful feature of the dress but felt much more comfortable for Katelyn.
Adding Lace Coverage to the Back
I also incorporated additional lace into the back of the wedding dress to create the coverage Katelyn wanted.
When adding lace to an existing designer gown, placement is extremely important.
The new appliqué needs to relate to the existing lace in its scale, direction and density. Otherwise, even beautifully sewn lace can look obviously added.
The additional lace was therefore positioned carefully so that it blended into the existing Stella York detailing and became part of the overall design rather than looking like a later alteration.
Shortening the Wedding Dress by Approximately 13 cm
The dress was also significantly too long and required approximately 13 cm to be removed from the hem.
Wedding dress hemming is very different from shortening an everyday dress, particularly when working with a gown containing several layers and decorative lace.
Each layer needs to sit at the correct level, while the transition between the shortened front and the original train must remain smooth and balanced.
The front of Katelyn’s gown was carefully re-hemmed to her finished length while retaining the graceful flow of the skirt and the drama of the train.
The finished length allowed her to walk comfortably on her wedding day without losing the elegant floor-length appearance of the dress.
Creating Three Bustle Points for the Train
Katelyn wanted to enjoy the beautiful train during her ceremony and photographs but also needed a practical way to manage it later in the day.
I therefore created three bustle points.
Using several carefully positioned bustle points allowed the weight and volume of the lace train to be distributed rather than pulling everything into one place.
Once bustled, the train could be lifted away from the floor while still creating an attractive shape at the back of the gown.
This gave Katelyn the best of both worlds: the full dramatic train for the formal part of her wedding and much more freedom to move and dance afterwards.
Final Adjustments – Right Up to the Wedding
Bridal alterations aren’t always completely linear.
A bride can put the gown on at a later fitting and realise that there is one small detail she would feel happier changing.
For me, the purpose of the fitting process is not simply to complete a predetermined list of alterations. It is to reach the point where the bride puts her dress on and genuinely feels comfortable and happy in it.
Katelyn mentioned this aspect of her experience in her review.
When she decided at the last minute that she wanted one small change, I was able to see her the following day so we could make sure everything was exactly as she wanted it.
That final reassurance can be just as important as the sewing itself.
The Wedding Day – A Dress That Finally Felt Like Hers
Seeing Katelyn’s wedding photographs afterwards was incredibly rewarding.
The transformation is particularly clear through the fitted silhouette.
What began as a size 12 outlet gown now followed her beautifully through the bust, waist, hips and thighs before releasing naturally below the knee into the skirt and train.
Despite approximately 12 cm being removed through much of the fitted section, extensive work to the bust, a new modesty panel, additional lace and a 13 cm re-hem, the dress still retained the appearance and character of the original Stella York design.
And that is exactly how extensive bridal alterations should look.
The workmanship should not be the first thing somebody notices when they see the bride.
They should simply see a beautiful wedding dress that fits her.

Professional Steam, Press & Bridal Party Preparation
Once Katelyn’s alterations were complete, her Stella York wedding dress was professionally steam pressed and carefully prepared for the wedding day.
With a gown like this, steaming is particularly important. The multiple layers of soft tulle need to fall naturally, while the lace appliqué, beading and long train need careful handling so that the finished silhouette looks its best without damaging the delicate embellishment.
I carefully steamed and prepared the gown, allowing the skirt and train to fall beautifully and giving the intricate lace detailing the finishing attention it deserved.
Katelyn’s wedding dress wasn’t the only gown I worked on for the family. I also altered her sister’s bridesmaid dress, navy dress with flutter sleeves.
Before the wedding, I also steam pressed two bridesmaid dresses and the flower girl’s dress, preparing the bridal party’s outfits alongside Katelyn’s gown.
Having several dresses professionally prepared together can take one more job off the family’s wedding-week list. Everything could leave my studio finished, pressed and ready for the celebrations.
For me, this final preparation is part of completing the bridal alterations journey. After all the fitting, restructuring and detailed handwork that went into transforming Katelyn’s dress from a size 12 to a size 8, I wanted the gown — and the bridal party dresses entrusted to me — to leave looking beautifully prepared for the day.
