Wedding Dress Alterations Chessington | Jo’s Sophia Tolli Lace Gown

Jo travelled from Chessington to my private bridal alterations studio in Sutton with her beautiful Sophia Tolli wedding dress. When she first came to see me, her wedding was only three weeks away, leaving a limited timeframe in which to complete several detailed alterations.
Her ivory lace gown, Sophia Tolli style Y11632, featured a fitted silhouette, delicate three-quarter-length sleeves, a softly shaped Bardot neckline and an elegant lace train.
The dress needed to be let out for a more comfortable fit, while its intricate lace hem had to be shortened all the way around. The sleeves, cups and Bardot area also required careful attention to improve the fit, support and overall balance of the gown.

A Romantic Sophia Tolli Lace Wedding Dress
Jo’s wedding dress was covered in beautiful floral lace from the Bardot neckline through to its scalloped hem and train.
The off-the-shoulder neckline framed Jo’s shoulders beautifully, while the fitted bodice and skirt created a classic, feminine silhouette. However, this style of neckline depends on the sleeves, cups and bodice all sitting correctly together.
Adjusting one area can affect the position of another, so the entire upper section needed to be fitted and refined as one.
Wedding Dress Alterations Completed in Three Weeks
With only three weeks remaining before Jo’s wedding, the fittings and sewing schedule had to be carefully planned.
This was not a simple alteration. The work included shortening and reconstructing the detailed lace hem, letting out the fitted dress, repairing and refining the lace sleeves, and adjusting the cups and Bardot bodice.

Every stage still required precision and attention to detail, particularly when working with the delicate lace and structured off-the-shoulder design.
The alterations were completed within the available timeframe, giving Jo a beautifully fitted and comfortable wedding dress that was ready for her special day.
Wedding dress alterations Chessington | Shortening the Detailed Lace Hem
Jo’s wedding dress needed to be shortened all the way around to sit correctly with her bridal shoes.
Because the skirt finished with an intricate scalloped lace border, this was not a straightforward machine-stitched hem. The decorative lace edging had to be carefully removed before the dress layers underneath could be shortened to the required length.

Once the skirt had been shortened and carefully balanced, the original lace border was meticulously repositioned and sewn back into place.
This preserved the beautiful scalloped finish and ensured the completed hem still looked entirely original to the Sophia Tolli design. The front of the dress now cleared the floor correctly, allowing Jo to walk comfortably while retaining the elegance of the lace train at the back.
Letting Out the Fitted Wedding Dress
The dress also needed to be let out to provide Jo with additional room and a more comfortable fit.
The available seam allowance was carefully assessed before selected areas of the gown were released. Working with a fitted lace wedding dress requires precision because the lining and lace overlay must continue to sit smoothly together after the alteration.
The fit was refined without disrupting the overall silhouette or creating visible interruptions through the lace design. This gave Jo the room she needed while allowing the dress to follow her figure naturally.
Wedding dress alterations Chessington | Adjusting the Bardot Bodice and Cups
The cups and Bardot area of the dress required adjustment to improve the shape, positioning and support across Jo’s bust.

A Bardot wedding dress must sit securely without looking tight or pulling across the neckline. The cups were carefully adjusted, and the surrounding bodice was refined so that the lace sat more smoothly and evenly.
These alterations created a better foundation beneath the dress while preserving the soft and romantic appearance of the original off-the-shoulder design.
Wedding dress alterations Chessington | Repairing and Refining the Lace Sleeves
Jo’s three-quarter-length lace sleeves also required attention. They were carefully repaired and adjusted so they sat more comfortably around her arms and connected neatly with the Bardot section of the dress.
With an off-the-shoulder gown, the positioning of the sleeves affects how the entire neckline sits. The sleeves and Bardot area were therefore fitted together, helping the neckline remain balanced while still allowing comfortable arm movement.
The finished sleeves complemented the bodice beautifully and retained the delicate appearance of the original lace.
Jo’s Finished Sophia Tolli Wedding Dress

It was wonderful to see Jo wearing her completed Sophia Tolli wedding dress on her wedding day.
The refined Bardot neckline framed her shoulders beautifully, while the adjusted cups and bodice gave the upper section a more supportive and flattering shape. The dress followed her figure elegantly without appearing strained, and the newly shortened lace hem sat at the correct length while preserving its original scalloped border.
Jo looked radiant, relaxed and completely herself in her finished dress. Her wedding photographs captured both the beautiful lace detailing and the timeless silhouette of her Sophia Tolli gown.
