Cheam Bridal Alterations: Two Wedding Looks in Stella York and Mori Lee

Stella York and Mori Lee wedding dress alterations

Mori Lee ballgown after wedding dress alterations for a Cheam bride

Why choose between two completely different bridal silhouettes when you can enjoy both? This Cheam bride came to my private Sutton studio with two beautiful wedding dresses: Stella York and Mori Lee wedding dress alterations, a fitted Stella York sample gown and a spectacular Mori Lee ballgown. Each dress created a distinctly different look, but both required professional fitting, shortening and bustling before they were ready for her wedding day.

A Fitted Stella York Sample Wedding Dress

Stella York and wedding dress alterations done by a couture bridal expert in Sutton Surrey.

The Stella York sample dress gave the bride an elegant, figure-skimming silhouette with a beautifully shaped fishtail skirt and a sweeping train.

As a former bridal sample, the gown needed to be carefully fitted to the bride’s individual proportions. Bridal sizing is only a starting point; even when a dress appears close to the correct size, refining its shape can make an enormous difference to how secure, balanced and flattering it feels.

Corrective fitting alterations to the bodice of a Mori Lee wedding dress

I fitted the Stella York gown to the bride’s figure, shortened the length and created a bustle for the train. The bustle allowed the bride to lift the train later in the celebration, making it much easier for her to walk, mingle and dance while preserving the fitted silhouette of the dress.

Once the alterations were completed, the gown followed her shape beautifully and created an effortlessly glamorous second bridal look.

The bride’s Mori Lee wedding dress offered a dramatic contrast. Its full skirt, romantic layers and classic ballgown silhouette created a truly fairytale bridal look.

The dress had been purchased second-hand and had previously been altered to accommodate a pregnant bride. As a result, the existing alterations and proportions no longer worked for its new owner. Considerable corrective work was needed to restore the fit and reshape the gown for my Cheam bride.

Buying a second-hand or previously altered wedding dress can be a wonderful way to find a beautiful designer gown. However, it is important to remember that earlier alterations may have changed the original construction, seam allowances or internal balance of the dress.

Rather than treating the Mori Lee gown as a straightforward fitting, I carefully assessed the previous work and adapted the dress around the new bride’s figure. The bodice and overall silhouette were fitted, the multiple skirt layers were shortened to the correct bridal length, and a bustle was added to manage the generous train.

The finished gown looked balanced, beautifully fitted and completely at home on its new bride.

Shortening Two Very Different Wedding Dresses

Although both gowns required shortening, the construction of the two skirts was very different.

The Stella York dress had a close-fitting fishtail silhouette that needed to retain its smooth line and elegant proportions after the hem was adjusted. The Mori Lee ballgown contained considerably more volume and multiple flowing layers, all of which needed to sit evenly at the bride’s chosen shoe height.

Wedding dress hems are individually pinned while the bride is wearing her wedding shoes. This ensures that the finished length works with her posture, the shape of the skirt and the way the gown falls around her body.

Bespoke Bustles for Both Bridal Looks

A bustle was created for each dress so that both trains could be lifted securely after the formal photographs and ceremony.

Because the weight, fabric and silhouette of each train were different, each bustle had to be individually positioned. A good wedding dress bustle should distribute the train attractively while allowing the bride to move comfortably without spoiling the design of the gown.

Two Dresses, One Beautiful Bride

The finished wedding photographs show just how successfully this Cheam bride carried two contrasting bridal looks.

The Mori Lee ballgown delivered romance, volume and fairytale drama, while the fitted Stella York sample dress offered a sleek, glamorous silhouette. Despite their differences,

The Bride’s Kind Words

“Zen is an absolute miracle worker! During COVID, she altered not just one, but two of my wedding dresses, and the results were flawless. Her attention to detail is second to none; she made sure every line, fit and fold was tailored perfectly.

Navigating wedding planning during the pandemic was tough, but working with Zen was a total joy. She is such a warm, beautiful person inside and out, and her talent is matched only by her kindness.

I am so grateful for her hard work, and I have recommended her to my friends, who have been extremely pleased with her work.”

It was an absolute pleasure working with this lovely bride and helping her prepare two beautiful dresses during such an uncertain time. Her warmth, trust and appreciation made the entire experience incredibly special. Receiving such kind words years later truly means the world to me, and knowing that she has also recommended me to friends is the greatest compliment I could receive.
