It is always lovely when bridal alterations become a family affair. While I was altering her daughter’s Essense of Australia D3763 wedding dress, I also had the pleasure of fitting Mum, who travelled all the way from Salisbury to my private alterations studio in Sutton with her beautiful Veni Infantino 992441 Ivory & Rose Pink mother-of-the-bride dress..
The dress was a lovely choice for the occasion, with its ivory off-the-shoulder bodice and rose-pink floral detailing. It already suited her beautifully, but the fit through the bodice needed refining so that it sat more closely and securely.
Her daughter had travelled from Raynes Park for her bridal fittings, while Mum made the considerably longer journey from Salisbury. It was a privilege that they both trusted me with such important outfits for the same wedding
Taking the Veni Infantino 992441 Dress In by One Full Size
The dress needed to be reduced by approximately one full size.
Rather than altering the Mother of the Bride Dress Alterations Salisbury from the side seams and disturbing the balance of the design, I carried out the adjustment through the centre-back zip seam. There was another reason as well, mum had very narrow shoulders so the best place to reduce size was via the back zip closure.
The dress was carefully taken in along the centre back so that it fitted more closely through the upper body while maintaining the original proportions of the garment.
On an occasion dress like this, the aim is for the alteration to be almost invisible. The finished dress should simply look as though it was originally made to fit the wearer.
Mother of the Bride Dress Alterations Salisbury | Refining the Fit Through the Back
The centre-back alteration gave the dress a cleaner and more secure fit without changing the overall character of the design.
Whenever I reduce a dress through a zip seam, I take particular care with the way the zip is replaced and how the seams meet afterwards. The finished centre back needs to remain smooth and balanced so that there is no obvious sign that the garment has been altered.
Once completed, the bodice sat much more neatly against the body while retaining the elegant off-the-shoulder neckline.
Travelling from Salisbury for Dress Alterations in Sutton
It was especially lovely that the mother of the bride chose to travel from Salisbury, near Stonehenge, to my Sutton studio for her alterations.
Although much of my work is bridal, I also regularly alter mother-of-the-bride dresses, mother-of-the-groom outfits and special-occasion dresses.
These garments can often require the same level of precision as a wedding dress, particularly where there are fitted bodices, structured necklines, lace, embroidery or detailed fabrics that need to remain perfectly balanced after alteration.

This was also a particularly special appointment because I was altering the bride’s wedding dress for the same celebration.
The bride’s Essense of Australia D3763 wedding gown required a substantial resize and reshaping, while her mother’s Veni Infantino dress needed a more subtle but equally important adjustment through the centre-back zip.
It was lovely to work on both outfits and see them come together for the wedding.
