Every wedding dress responds differently when it is altered. The fabric, internal construction, embellishment and balance of the original design must all be considered. My role is to improve the fit and support while preserving the character of the gown and helping the bride feel completely comfortable.
Bridal alterations for brides travelling from Streatham
A bride recently travelled from Streatham to my Sutton studio with her Vivienne Westwood Nova Grace wedding dress. Her experience is a lovely example of the specialist work that can be involved in preparing a designer gown for the wedding day.
The Nova Grace had been purchased as a bridal sample. It required a carefully balanced hem, internal boning repairs, supportive bust cups and minor repairs to the fastenings for its detachable straps. I also added discreet loops for the dramatic detachable train before professionally steam pressing the dress, train and lace veil.
After the wedding, the bride kindly sent me her photographs and said:

Specialist wedding dress alterations
Some gowns need only a few precise adjustments, while others require several alterations working together to create the finished fit.
My bridal alteration services can include:

Wedding dress hem shortening and balancing
The correct bridal shoes must be worn when the wedding dress hem is pinned. The bride should also stand naturally so that the finished length works with her individual posture.
A hem does not always require the same amount to be removed across the entire front of the dress. Differences in posture, body shape and the way a gown sits at the waist can affect how the skirt falls.
For the Streatham bride’s Vivienne Westwood gown, each part of the hem was assessed individually. This allowed the smooth crepe satin skirt to appear balanced when she stood naturally.
Plain fabrics can be particularly revealing because there is no lace or embellishment to disguise an uneven line. Accurate fitting and careful finishing are therefore essential.
Bodice alterations, corsetry and bust support
A well-fitted bodice should feel secure without restricting the bride’s breathing or movement. The neckline, cups, straps and internal construction must work together.
Depending on the design, bodice alterations may include taking in the side seams or centre back, adjusting the neckline, repositioning straps, changing the bust cups or adding an internal corset.
Bust support should always remain discreet beneath the outer fabric. This is particularly important with satin, crepe and other smooth materials where the internal finish can affect the appearance of the gown.
When working with a designer dress, I carefully preserve its original seam lines, draping and proportions wherever possible.
Alterations and repairs for sample wedding dresses
A sample or ex-display wedding dress can be an excellent choice, but it should be carefully checked before alterations begin.
Repeated handling and trying on may affect:
- Internal boning
- Zips and fastenings
- Buttons and buttonholes
- Straps and attachment points
- Beading or lace appliqué
- Hem edges
- Linings and internal seams
Small repairs can make an important difference to how secure and beautifully finished the dress feels on the wedding day.
The Streatham bride’s Nova Grace required attention to its internal boning and the buttons and buttonholes securing the detachable straps. These details were repaired while retaining the gown’s original appearance.
Wedding dress bustles and detachable trains
A bustle lifts and secures the train after the ceremony, allowing the bride to walk and dance more freely. The number, style and position of the bustle points depend on the shape, length, weight and construction of the train.
Some gowns instead feature a fully detachable train. Its attachment points must support the fabric securely while remaining as discreet as possible.
Bustles and detachable elements should be tested during the fitting. I also recommend that the person helping the bride on the wedding day sees how the fastening works.
Wedding dress and veil steam pressing
Professional preparation is the final stage of the alteration process. Once the sewing is complete, the wedding dress and veil can be carefully steam pressed so that the fabric, seams and train are presented beautifully.
Each material requires appropriate handling. Satin, crepe, lace, tulle and embellished fabrics respond differently to heat and steam.
Detachable trains, sleeves and veils are prepared separately where necessary. The completed bridal look is then protected and made ready for collection.

The usual process includes a prefit consultation, followed by the main fitting and a follow-up appointment. The precise schedule depends on the work required and the wedding date.
I generally recommend arranging the main alteration period approximately four weeks before the wedding. Brides with a shorter timeframe are still welcome to contact me, as availability and the complexity of the alterations will determine what can be accommodated.
