Sevenoaks Bridal Alterations | A Stella York Wedding Dress Transformation

This Sevenoaks bridal alterations story began with a Stella York wedding dress purchased just five weeks before the wedding. The bride found her gown at Outlet by Aurora, who recommended me for her alterations, and travelled from Sevenoaks in Kent to my private studio in Sutton.

Her dress had a delicate illusion halter neckline, floral lace detailing across the bodice and a softly flowing tulle skirt. However, it was six inches too big and too long, and needed substantial alterations before it was ready for her wedding.

With a short timeframe ahead, I completed the taking in, hem shortening, multiple bustle points and final steam pressing.

Sevenoaks Bridal Alterations | A Recommendation from Outlet by Aurora

It is always a pleasure to welcome a bride through a boutique’s recommendation. Choosing someone to alter your wedding dress involves trust, particularly when the wedding is only a few weeks away.

Having purchased her Stella York gown at Outlet by Aurora, this bride came to my Sutton studio to have it fitted to her. The dress had beautiful details; my role was to preserve their character while bringing the fit and length into proportion.

Taking In the Gown by Six Inches

The most significant part of the work was taking in the gown by six inches.

A reduction of this size calls for careful consideration of the overall silhouette. With floral lace across the bodice and a sheer neckline, the relationship between the bust, waist and surrounding details is especially noticeable.

My focus was to shape the dress to the bride while maintaining the balance of the original design. The fitted bodice needed to sit harmoniously above the soft skirt, allowing the lace detailing and defined waist to remain the centre of attention.

This is where thoughtful bridal alterations make such a difference: the gown retains the features the bride fell in love with, with a fit that feels personal to her.

Shortening the Flowing Tulle Skirt

The dress also needed shortening to achieve a suitable hem length.

The lightness of the tulle was an important part of this gown’s appeal. Altering the length required attention to how the skirt fell, keeping its soft appearance while removing the excess length.

Together, the taking in and hem adjustment brought the dress into proportion, creating a more balanced silhouette from neckline to hem.

Multiple Bustle Points for the Train

I also added multiple bustle points so the train could be lifted for the celebrations.

A bustle needs to suit the individual gown. The placement of each point affects how the train gathers and how the fabric falls once lifted. On this Stella York dress, several points allowed the train to be gathered and supported across the back.

This practical addition gave the bride the option of displaying her train for the ceremony and photographs, then lifting it for easier movement later in the day.

The Finishing Touch: Steam Pressing

After completing the alterations, I carefully steam-pressed the wedding dress.

The final preparation deserves the same attention as the fitting. Steam pressing helps release creases and allows the skirt to settle, showing the gown’s shape and delicate details at their best.

From the substantial taking in to the shortened hem, bustle points and final pressing, the dress was prepared in time for the wedding.

From Sevenoaks to My Sutton Studio

There were just five weeks between this bride purchasing her gown and her wedding. Within that window, her dress went from being significantly oversized and too long to being altered and prepared for her day.

It was a pleasure to welcome her from Sevenoaks and work on her Stella York gown. I am also grateful to Outlet by Aurora for recommending me and trusting me with this important part of her wedding preparations.
