Cobham Bridal Alterations – WONA Concept Bronx Wedding Dress Transformation

Every wedding dress has its own character, but some designs require far more than conventional alterations to achieve the perfect fit. When a bride travelled from Cobham to my private bridal alterations studio in Sutton, Surrey, she brought with her a stunning WONA Concept Bronx wedding dress, a beautifully structured creation featuring intricate floral lace, delicate eyelash edging and a dramatic fitted silhouette.
What made this Cobham bridal alterations project particularly interesting was the gown’s connection to my own professional journey. The bride had purchased her dress from Love Bridal in Crystal Palace, a boutique where I had previously worked as their principal bridal fitting and alterations expert for seven years, from 2012 to 2019, before their alterations arrangements moved in-house with Mews Alterations.
Having spent those years working closely with brides and their wedding gowns, it was a pleasure to see that professional connection come full circle, this time welcoming a bride to my own Sutton studio for an intricate designer wedding dress transformation.

This particular Cobham bridal alterations project involved a series of carefully considered changes, including reducing the gown by one full dress size, adjusting sleeves, creating an internal supporting corset, contouring the bust, adding scalloped lace to the front neckline, shortening the dress and incorporating a practical dance loop.

Each adjustment was undertaken with one aim: to preserve the beauty of the original designer gown while creating a more flattering, supportive and comfortable fit for the bride.
The WONA Concept Bronx – Romantic Lace Meets Architectural Corsetry
The WONA Concept Bronx is a distinctive wedding dress that beautifully combines romantic detailing with contemporary bridal construction.
Its fitted silhouette is complemented by intricate ivory floral lace, a structured sweetheart bodice with visible corset lines, delicate eyelash lace and an elegant train.

The coordinating lace sleeves introduce another layer of romance, while the striking bodice provides the architectural foundation of the design.
What makes this particular gown so interesting from a dressmaker’s perspective is the relationship between its structured internal construction and the delicate lace that covers it.
Unlike softer, unstructured wedding dresses, a corseted gown demands an understanding of how the various components work together.
Any adjustment to the bust, neckline, waist or side seams must be carefully considered to maintain the gown’s original proportions.
For this bride, achieving the desired fit involved working on both the visible appearance and the supporting construction hidden beneath the lace.
Cobham Bridal Alterations | Taking the WONA Concept Bronx In by One Full Dress Size

The first significant alteration involved reducing the gown by one full dress size.
Although the dress already had a beautifully defined shape, it needed to be adjusted to follow the bride’s individual measurements more closely.
With a fitted bridal gown, taking in excess fabric requires much more than simply narrowing the seams.
The relationship between the bust, waist, hips and skirt must remain balanced to create a smooth, flattering silhouette.
I carefully refined the fit, paying particular attention to the way the structured bodice transitioned into the closely fitted lace skirt.
The aim was to achieve a more sculpted appearance without creating unnecessary tension or compromising the natural movement of the fabric.
Preserving the original character of a designer wedding dress is always an important consideration in my work.
A successful alteration should feel entirely natural, as though the gown had been made for the bride from the beginning.

Cobham Bridal Alterations – Specialist Internal Corset and Bust Support
One of the most technically important aspects of this transformation was the addition of an internal supporting corset.
Although the Bronx already featured a structured external bodice, the bride required additional bust support to achieve the desired shape and security.
This meant working beneath the visible lace and corset detailing to improve the gown’s internal construction.
I added a separate internal corset to provide the necessary support and work in harmony with the existing bodice.
This additional structure helped support the bust, stabilise the upper section of the dress and improve the overall fit.
For a bride wearing a low-cut or strapless wedding gown, properly engineered internal support can make an enormous difference.

It allows the exterior of the dress to maintain its intended shape without relying solely on tightness around the bust.
One of the aspects I particularly enjoy about specialist bridal alterations is the craftsmanship that remains hidden.
The bride sees the beautiful finished exterior, but much of the work responsible for achieving that result is carefully concealed inside the gown.
Precision Bust Contouring and Reshaping the Sweetheart Neckline
The sweetheart neckline of the WONA Concept Bronx is one of its most recognisable features.
However, the original bust shape needed refining to complement the bride’s figure.
This required careful contouring around the bust cups and neckline, ensuring that the upper bodice followed her shape more naturally.
Working with a corseted bust is particularly delicate because several construction elements meet within a relatively small area.
The shaping of the cups, placement of the neckline, supporting structure and lace covering all influence the finished appearance.
The fitting photographs capture the careful pinning and positioning involved in achieving these adjustments.
Rather than dramatically changing the designer’s original neckline, my intention was to improve its shape, balance and support while retaining its romantic character.
The combination of the internal corset and refined bust contouring created a more secure and personalised fit.
Adding Delicate Scalloped Lace to the Front Neckline
Perhaps one of my favourite details in this project was the addition of scalloped lace along the front of the neckline.
The WONA Concept Bronx already featured beautiful floral lace and delicate eyelash edging, so any additional embellishment needed to blend naturally with the existing design.

I carefully positioned the scalloped lace to soften the upper edge of the bodice and complement the shape of the sweetheart neckline.
This required close attention to the placement of the lace, its symmetry and the relationship between the new decorative detail and the existing fabric.
With delicate bridal lace, even a small adjustment can dramatically change the appearance of a neckline.

The scalloped finish introduced additional softness and romance while preserving the gown’s distinctive structured shape.
It was a subtle change, but one that contributed beautifully to the overall transformation.
For me, this is where technical alterations and creative dressmaking meet: when a functional adjustment becomes an opportunity to enhance the design itself.
Shortening and Tapering the Delicate Lace Sleeves
Another important part of this transformation involved shortening and tapering the gown’s intricate lace sleeves.
The WONA Concept Bronx features beautiful, fitted lace sleeves with delicate floral patterns and fine edging.
While the original sleeves complemented the romantic design, they required adjustments to achieve the desired length and a more refined fit along the arms.

I shortened the sleeves and carefully tapered their shape, reducing the excess width to create a neater, more fitted silhouette.
Unlike sleeves made from plain fabric, delicate bridal lace presents additional challenges.
The lace pattern, transparency and decorative edges all influence how alterations should be approached.
Care is needed to ensure that the revised sleeve proportions look balanced and that the floral detailing continues to complement the rest of the gown.
The alterations also needed to work in harmony with the off-the-shoulder styling, preserving the romantic appearance of the sleeves while refining their overall fit.
Shortening and tapering the sleeves helped create a more cohesive look, particularly in relation to the fitted corset bodice.
This is one of those alterations that can appear subtle in the finished dress but makes a noticeable difference to the overall silhouette.
Shortening the Lace Wedding Dress
Another important part of the alterations involved shortening the dress to the bride’s required length.
With a closely fitted lace gown, the hemline is particularly significant because it influences the balance of the entire silhouette.
The front length needs to allow comfortable movement while maintaining the elegant transition into the skirt and train.

Shortening a lace wedding dress also requires careful consideration of the fabric and its decorative finishing.
My objective was to achieve the appropriate finished length while preserving the beauty and proportions of the original gown.
The shortened dress retained its graceful shape, allowing the lace skirt and dramatic train to remain the focus of the design.
Adding a Dance Loop for the Wedding Reception
The Bronx gown features a beautiful train that creates a dramatic effect when fully extended.
While this is wonderful for the ceremony and wedding photographs, carrying a long train throughout an entire reception can be inconvenient.
To make the dress more practical, I added a dance loop.

This allows the bride to lift the train when needed, making it easier to move around during the celebrations.
Although relatively discreet, a properly positioned dance loop is an important finishing detail.
It must be practical, secure and appropriate for the construction and weight of the train.
These are the little considerations that help a wedding dress work just as beautifully as it looks.
Cobham Bridal Alterations | The Final Fitting – Bringing Every Detail Together
One of the most satisfying stages of any bridal alteration is seeing the completed gown on the bride.

With this WONA Concept Bronx, the combination of alterations created a more personalised silhouette while maintaining the distinctive character of the designer’s original creation.
The reduction in size improved the fit through the body, while the newly added internal corset provided additional bust support.
Careful contouring refined the sweetheart neckline, and the scalloped lace detailing brought an extra touch of softness to the structured bodice.
The shortened length and dance loop provided practical finishing touches without compromising the gown’s elegance.
Seeing the bride wearing the dress with her veil brought the entire look together.
The intricate lace, sculpted waist, fitted skirt and romantic train created a lovely balance between contemporary bridal styling and traditional craftsmanship.
For me, the most rewarding aspect was knowing that the various alterations worked together rather than appearing as separate changes.
That is always the aim when working with an intricately constructed designer wedding dress.
Why Specialist Bridal Alterations Make a Difference
A designer wedding dress may be beautifully made, but that does not necessarily mean it will fit every bride perfectly straight from the boutique.
Standard dress sizing cannot account for the individual proportions, posture and support requirements of every person.
This is particularly true of fitted, structured wedding dresses, where even small discrepancies in fit can affect the entire silhouette.
The WONA Concept Bronx demonstrated why specialist bridal alteration skills are so valuable.
From understanding the original corset construction to introducing internal bust support, reshaping the neckline and working with delicate lace, every stage required careful consideration.
For brides seeking Cobham bridal alterations, it is worth remembering that the quality of the work beneath the fabric can be just as important as the finishing details on the outside.
My approach combines traditional dressmaking knowledge, precision fitting and detailed hand-finishing, always with respect for the original design and the individual bride.
