Oxted Bridal Alterations – WED2B Sofia Cruz Florentina Resized by Two Dress Sizes

An Oxted Bride Travels to Sutton for Specialist Wedding Dress Alterations
Finding your dream wedding dress is a wonderful moment, but what happens when you lose weight before your wedding and the dress you have purchased is suddenly too big? This was the challenge facing one of my lovely brides, who travelled from Oxted, Surrey, to my specialist bridal alterations studio in Sutton with her beautiful WED2B Sofia Cruz Florentina wedding dress.
The bride had lost weight, leaving her gown approximately two dress sizes too large. Unfortunately, she was unable to obtain the same dress in a smaller size.
Rather than compromise on the wedding dress she had fallen in love with, she came to me for specialist alterations.
The Florentina is no ordinary gown. Made from luxurious ivory floral brocade, it features a structured fitted bodice, elegant square neckline, low scoop back, dramatically pleated ballgown skirt and a magnificent train with fabric-covered buttons.
My task was to reduce the gown by approximately four inches, equivalent to two dress sizes, while preserving its original design, proportions and beautiful silhouette.
In addition to the extensive resizing, I added bust support, shortened the dress, created wedding dress bustles and professionally steam pressed the gown in preparation for her special day.
The WED2B Sofia Cruz Florentina – An Elegant Brocade Ballgown for a bride from Oxted
The Sofia Cruz Florentina by WED2B is a particularly beautiful example of traditional bridal elegance combined with contemporary design.

Its luxurious ivory brocade fabric features an intricate woven floral pattern, which gives the dress texture, depth and a subtle sheen.
The elegant square neckline and structured bodice create a clean, refined silhouette, while the low scoop back adds a romantic touch.
The waistline flows into a generously pleated ballgown skirt, creating beautiful volume without compromising the fitted appearance of the bodice.
One of the most distinctive features is the magnificent sweeping train, finished with a long row of delicate fabric-covered buttons running down the centre back.
As a bridal seamstress, I particularly appreciate dresses that rely on beautiful fabric and precise construction rather than embellishment alone.
However, these are also the gowns where alterations require considerable skill, because the shape and tailoring are essential to the overall design.
Oxted Bridal alterations | Taking the Wedding Dress In by Four Inches – Two Dress Sizes Smaller
The most substantial alteration on this dress was reducing its size.
The gown was originally purchased in a UK size 20, but following the bride’s weight loss, it was now approximately two dress sizes too large.

As a smaller size was unavailable, the existing gown needed to be professionally resized.
I took the dress in by approximately four inches overall, reducing the fit by around two dress sizes.
This was much more involved than simply taking in an ordinary dress.
The Florentina’s structured bodice, fitted waist, low back and generously pleated brocade skirt all form part of a carefully balanced design.
When reducing a wedding dress by this amount, particular attention must be given to maintaining the original proportions of the garment.
The bodice must sit correctly against the figure, the waistline must remain balanced, and the transition into the full skirt must retain the designer’s intended silhouette.
The back of the Florentina also deserves special attention because its low neckline and fabric-covered button detail are prominent design features.
Large reductions can affect how a dress hangs and how the various sections of the garment relate to one another.
My approach was to carefully resize the gown while preserving the beautiful structure and appearance that had originally attracted the bride to this design.
For me, this is one of the most rewarding aspects of specialist bridal alterations: being able to adapt a wedding dress to a bride’s changing figure rather than having her abandon the gown she loves.
Oxted Bridal Alterations | Adding Bust Support to a Structured Low-Back Wedding Dress
Alongside the extensive size reduction, the bride also required additional bust support.
This was particularly important because the Florentina has a low scoop back, making conventional bra options less practical.

A well-fitted wedding dress should feel secure and comfortable without the bride having to worry about continually adjusting the bodice.
I incorporated additional bust support, taking into consideration the dress’s existing structure and the alterations already being undertaken.
The aim was to improve support without interfering with the clean square neckline or the elegant low-back design.
When a wedding dress is reduced by two sizes, the relationship between the bust, waist, neckline and overall bodice fit becomes especially important.
Good bridal alterations are not simply about making a dress smaller. They are about ensuring that the individual elements of the gown work together harmoniously.
Oxted Bridal Alterations | Shortening the Full Brocade Wedding Dress
The Florentina also required shortening to achieve the appropriate length for the bride.
Hemming a full bridal ballgown is quite different from shortening a straight skirt or an everyday dress.
The Florentina has a substantial amount of fabric, with generous folds and a structured brocade that gives the skirt its beautiful volume.

Care must be taken to preserve the original flow and proportions of the gown.
I shortened the wedding dress while considering the way the skirt falls around the bride and how the altered length would work with its overall silhouette.
The challenge was to make the dress practical to wear without losing the graceful, full-skirted appearance that makes the Florentina so special.
Creating Wedding Dress Bustles for the Dramatic Train
One of my favourite elements of this gown is its magnificent train.
The beautifully patterned ivory brocade flows into a wide, sweeping train, with the fabric-covered buttons continuing down the centre back.

It creates a lovely effect when the bride walks, particularly when viewed from behind.
However, a train of this size can become difficult to manage during the wedding reception.
To provide a practical solution, I added wedding dress bustles, allowing the bride to lift and secure the train when needed.
Bustling a substantial brocade train requires consideration of its weight, volume and shape.
The gathered fabric needs to be supported securely while maintaining an attractive appearance.
It is also important to consider the position of the button detailing and the way the pleated skirt falls when the train is lifted.
The result was a more manageable gown for the bride’s celebrations, while retaining the beauty of its original design.
Professional Steam Pressing – Preparing the Florentina for the Wedding Day
After completing the bridal alterations, I professionally steam pressed the gown.
This finishing stage is particularly important for wedding dresses made from textured and structured fabrics such as brocade.

The Florentina’s generous skirt, fitted bodice and elaborate train all require careful handling.
Wedding dresses can develop creases during transportation, fittings and storage, and these can detract from the appearance of even the most beautiful gown.
Professional steam pressing helps improve the fabric’s presentation while respecting its woven texture and structure.
I paid attention to the bodice, skirt, pleats and train, ensuring the gown was beautifully prepared for the wedding day.
To me, the final finishing is just as important as the alterations themselves.
Groom’s Suit Alterations & Professional Wedding Outfit Steam Pressing
Alongside the extensive bridal alterations to the WED2B Sofia Cruz Florentina wedding dress, I also had the pleasure of preparing the groom’s wedding outfit. I carried out trouser alterations and professionally steam pressed his complete wedding suit, shirt and pocket square, ensuring everything was beautifully presented for the special day.
Preparing both the bride’s gown and the groom’s outfit was particularly rewarding, allowing me to contribute to the couple’s wedding-day preparations. Although I don’t have photographs of the groom’s attire, all alterations and finishing were personally undertaken at my Sutton, Surrey studio, providing a complete bridal and groom’s outfit preparation service for this lovely couple from Oxted.
The Finishing Touch – A Beautiful Bridal Veil
During the fittings, we also photographed the Florentina styled with a bridal veil.
The delicate tulle created a lovely contrast against the structured brocade fabric, softening the overall appearance while allowing the gown’s design to remain the centre of attention.

From the front, the square neckline and full ballgown skirt created a classic bridal silhouette.
From the back, the low scoop neckline, delicate button detailing and sweeping train looked particularly beautiful beneath the soft veil.
The fitting photographs also show the volume and structure of the skirt, which are important details when carrying out extensive alterations to a gown of this style.
Seeing the dress come together after such a substantial size reduction was especially rewarding.
Why Major Wedding Dress Resizing Requires Specialist Experience
Losing weight between purchasing a wedding dress and the wedding day is not unusual.
Sometimes a bride can exchange her gown for a smaller size. However, this is not always possible, particularly when a particular style or size is no longer available.
That does not necessarily mean the bride has to give up her dream dress.
Depending on the gown’s construction, fabric and the amount of alteration required, it may be possible to make significant adjustments.

Reducing a wedding dress by two sizes is a substantial undertaking, especially when the design includes a fitted structured bodice and full skirt.
The original shape, neckline, waistline, seams and overall proportions must all be considered.
Every dress is different, and not every gown can be reduced by the same amount or in the same way.
This is why I believe each wedding dress should be assessed individually before undertaking major alterations.
For this Oxted bride, the Florentina was successfully adapted through a combination of extensive resizing, additional bust support, shortening, bustling and professional finishing.

Specialist Wedding Dress Alterations for Brides Who Have Lost Weight
This Florentina alteration is a lovely reminder that a wedding dress becoming too large does not automatically mean it has to be replaced.
When the right smaller size is unavailable, professional bridal alterations may offer a solution.
For this bride, reducing her WED2B Florentina by approximately four inches — two dress sizes — allowed her to continue with the wedding dress she had originally chosen.
The additional bust support, shortening, bustles and professional steam pressing helped prepare the gown for the practical demands of the wedding day.
What began as a dress that had become too large following weight loss was carefully transformed to suit the bride’s new figure.
And for me, being trusted with that transformation is one of the most satisfying parts of my work.
