Vivienne Westwood Bridal Alterations for a Streatham Bride
This Streatham bride brought her beautiful Vivienne Westwood Nova Grace wedding dress to my bridal alterations studio in Sutton. The gown was made in elegant crepe satin and featured Vivienne Westwood’s distinctive draped neckline, fitted silhouette and detachable off-the-shoulder straps.
As the dress had previously been used as a bridal sample, it needed several careful alterations and small repairs before the wedding. The work included shortening and balancing the hem, repairing the internal boning, adding bust cups and creating discreet attachment loops for the detachable train.
I also repaired the buttons and buttonholes used to secure the detachable straps. Once everything was complete, I professionally steam pressed the wedding dress, train and veil.
Vivienne Westwood Nova Grace wedding dress
The Nova Grace is a beautifully sculpted Vivienne Westwood bridal gown. Although its silhouette appears soft and effortless, the draping relies on the internal structure and fit of the bodice.
The crepe satin also needs to hang smoothly across the body. Small changes to the structure, support or hem can affect the overall balance of the dress. Therefore, every alteration had to be completed carefully while preserving the original design.
The bridal alterations included:
- Shortening and individually balancing the hem
- Repairing damaged internal boning
- Adding supportive bust cups
- Repairing the buttons and buttonholes for the detachable straps
- Adding discreet loops for the detachable train
- Professionally steam pressing the dress
- Steam pressing the detachable train and veil
Vivienne Westwood bridal alterations Streatham | Balancing the wedding dress hem for scoliosis
This bride had scoliosis, which affected her posture and the way the dress naturally fell when she was standing.
For this reason, I could not shorten the gown by simply removing the same measurement all the way around the hem. Instead, I assessed and pinned each section while the bride was wearing the dress in her natural posture.
The hem was carefully balanced around her individual stance so that it appeared level when worn. This required different amounts to be removed from different areas of the dress.
This type of personalised fitting is especially important with a smooth crepe satin gown. There is no lace or embellishment to disguise the hemline, so its balance and finish need to be precise.
The purpose was not to alter the bride’s natural posture. It was to make the wedding dress work beautifully with her body and allow the skirt to fall as evenly as possible.

As the Nova Grace had been purchased as a bridal sample, some of the internal boning needed attention.
Boning provides hidden support inside the bodice. It helps the neckline and draping remain in position while maintaining the gown’s sculpted silhouette.
I repaired the affected boning before completing the final fitting. This restored the necessary structure without changing the external appearance of the dress.

Supportive bust cups were added inside the gown to improve the fit and create a smooth shape beneath the draped neckline.
The cups were carefully positioned during the fitting so that they worked with the bride’s proportions and the existing construction of the bodice. Once secured, they remained discreet beneath the crepe satin.
Repairing the detachable straps
The Nova Grace featured detachable off-the-shoulder straps. The buttons and buttonholes used to secure them required minor repairs because the gown had previously been handled as a sample.
I repaired these fastening points so that the straps attached neatly and remained secure. It was a relatively small alteration, but an important detail for the bride’s comfort and confidence.
Adding loops for the detachable train
The gown was accompanied by a dramatic detachable train. I added discreet attachment loops to the dress so that the train could be fitted securely without affecting the appearance of the gown.
The bride could wear the complete silhouette for the ceremony and photographs, then remove the train later for greater freedom of movement.
The attachment points needed to support the train while remaining as unobtrusive as possible when it was removed.
Steam pressing the wedding dress, train and veil
After completing the alterations and repairs, I professionally steam pressed the wedding dress, detachable train and veil.
Crepe satin needs careful handling during steaming. The aim is to release creases while protecting the surface of the fabric and preserving the designer’s sculptural draping.
Each piece was prepared separately so that the entire bridal look was ready for the wedding day.
At the final fitting, the hem was balanced for the bride’s natural posture, the bodice had the correct support and the detachable train fell beautifully behind the gown.
