Milla Nova Ermana Wedding Dress Alterations for a Carshalton Bride
Emilie travelled from Carshalton to my private bridal alterations studio in Sutton with her beautiful Milla Nova Ermana wedding dress. This striking Mikado ballgown needed several carefully planned adjustments to refine the fit, improve the internal support and make the dramatic skirt practical throughout her wedding day.
These Milla Nova Ermana wedding dress alterations included taking the gown in by one dress size, shortening the full skirt, adding bust support and fitting an internal corset. I also created a bustle for the train and professionally steam pressed the completed dress before the wedding.
Altering the Milla Nova Ermana Wedding Dress
The Milla Nova Ermana is an elegant princess-style gown made from luxurious Mikado. It features a structured fitted bodice, softly draped straight neckline, wide shoulder straps and a generously pleated skirt. At the back, decorative covered buttons continue down the gown towards its sweeping train.
The simplicity of a smooth Mikado dress makes precision especially important. Unlike heavily embellished fabrics, there is nowhere for an uneven seam, disrupted fold or slight imbalance to hide. Every alteration therefore had to preserve the clean architectural lines of the bodice and the even fall of the voluminous skirt.
Milla Nova Ermana Wedding Dress Alterations | Taking the Wedding Dress In by One Size
The gown needed to be taken in by approximately one full dress size. This was carefully balanced through the bodice so it followed Emilie’s shape securely while keeping the neckline, straps and waistline correctly positioned.
On a structured gown, achieving a close fit is not simply about making the outer fabric smaller. The internal construction must work with the altered bodice so the dress remains smooth, comfortable and properly supported.
Once adjusted, the gown sat neatly through the bust and waist while retaining the beautiful shape intended by the designer.
Milla Nova Ermana Wedding Dress Alterations | Adding Bust Support and an Internal Corset
To provide greater security and definition, I added discreet bust support and fitted an internal corset inside the dress. These additions helped support the weight of the gown from within, improved the shaping of the bodice and allowed the straight neckline to sit cleanly against the body.
An internal corset is particularly valuable in a full Mikado ballgown. It helps anchor the dress at the waist instead of leaving the shoulder straps to carry the weight of the skirt.
The additional support remained completely concealed, allowing the outside of the gown to retain its beautifully minimal and uninterrupted appearance.
Shortening the Full Mikado Skirt
The skirt was shortened to the correct length for Emilie and her wedding shoes. With such a wide, pleated skirt, the hem needed to be carefully measured and balanced around the entire gown.
The aim was to give her enough clearance to walk comfortably while maintaining the Ermana’s sweeping princess silhouette. The finished hem allowed the skirt to move naturally without losing the drama and volume that make this design so memorable.
Creating a Bustle for the Train
The Ermana gown has a long statement train that looks spectacular for the ceremony and photographs. For the reception, however, Emilie needed a practical way to lift the train so she could walk and dance more freely.
I created a secure bustle that gathered the train neatly while respecting the fullness of the skirt and the line of covered buttons down the back.
This gave Emilie the option of displaying the train earlier in the day and lifting it later without changing the character of the dress.
Professional Wedding Dress Steam Pressing
Once all the alterations were complete, I professionally steam pressed the entire wedding dress. Mikado creates a beautiful luminous finish, but its broad, smooth surface can also make storage and travel creases particularly noticeable.
Careful pressing relaxed those creases while preserving the structure, pleats and volume of the gown. The dress was then ready for Emilie to wear, with the skirt falling smoothly and the bodice looking crisp and beautifully finished.
