Dorking Wedding Dress Alterations for a Dama Couture Amanda Dress

These Dorking wedding dress alterations were completed for a lovely bride who travelled from Dorking to my private bridal alterations studio in Sutton after being recommended to me by Brides by Aster.
Her beautiful Dama Couture Amanda wedding dress featured a short, softly flared skirt, a plunging neckline and delicate floral embroidery over a warm ivory underlayer. Although she loved the overall shape and character of the dress, she wanted some of its decorative details refined so that it felt more personal to her.
These Dorking wedding dress alterations included carefully removing the three-dimensional organza flowers, adding bust cups, applying soft velvet ribbon beneath the narrow shoulder straps and professionally steam pressing both the wedding dress and veil.
Personalising the Dama Couture Amanda Wedding Dress

Wedding dress alterations are not always about changing the size or length of a gown. Sometimes the most important work involves refining the original design so that it better reflects the bride’s individual taste.
The Amanda dress already had beautiful floral embroidery across its bodice and skirt. However, it also featured additional organza flowers that the bride did not feel suited the look she wanted.
Rather than removing the floral character of the gown completely, the aim was to take away the raised organza decorations while preserving the embroidered lace beneath them.
Dorking Wedding dress Alterations | Carefully Removing the Organza Flowers

Each organza flower had to be detached individually and with great care. The flowers were attached to delicate layers of embroidered tulle, so their removal needed to be controlled to avoid catching, marking or damaging the surrounding fabric.
Once the organza flowers had been removed, the flatter embroidered floral design became the main focus of the dress. This created a cleaner and slightly more understated finish while retaining the romantic character of the original Dama Couture design.
It was a subtle transformation, but one that made the wedding dress feel much more suited to the bride’s personal style.
Dorking Wedding dress Alterations | Adding Bust Cups for Shape and Support
Bust cups were added inside the bodice to provide greater shaping and support without distracting from the plunging neckline or the semi-sheer appearance of the embroidered lace.

The position of the cups was carefully assessed during the fitting so that they sat naturally within the existing construction of the bodice. Once secured, they helped create a more defined and supported shape while remaining discreet from the outside of the dress.
This type of internal alteration can make a significant difference to how confident and comfortable a bride feels, particularly with a low or open neckline.
Adding Velvet Ribbon Beneath the Shoulder Straps
The Amanda dress featured very narrow embroidered shoulder straps. To improve their comfort against the skin, I added soft velvet ribbon neatly beneath them.

The ribbon created a smoother, softer layer between the straps and the bride’s shoulders while remaining concealed from view. It also gave the inside of the straps a clean and carefully finished appearance without changing their delicate look from the outside.
Small internal details such as this may not be visible in photographs, but they can make an important difference when a wedding dress is worn for many hours.
Professionally Steam Pressing the Dress and Veil
Once all the alterations and finishing work were complete, the Dama Couture dress was professionally steam pressed.
The embroidered lace and softly flared skirt were carefully treated so that the fabric could settle naturally without flattening or disturbing the floral details. The bride’s beautiful heart-detailed veil was also opened out and steam pressed, allowing the tulle, appliqués and decorative edging to fall smoothly.
Steam pressing both the wedding dress and veil ensured that everything was beautifully presented and ready for the wedding day.
The Finished Dama Couture Bridal Look
The completed dress retained everything the bride loved about the Amanda design while removing the details that did not feel right for her.

With the organza flowers removed, the embroidered lace had a cleaner appearance. The added bust cups provided discreet shaping and support, while the velvet ribbon beneath the straps improved comfort without being visible.
The final result was a romantic and individual short wedding dress that felt much more personal to the bride.
