Stella York Bridal Alterations for a Bromley Bride | Couture Expert
These Stella York bridal alterations for a Bromley bride transformed a beautiful but slightly oversized gown into a secure, supportive and perfectly balanced wedding dress for her celebration in Devon.
The bride found her Stella York Style 7897 at Isabella Grace Bridal before travelling from Bromley to my private Sutton studio for her wedding dress alterations.
Featuring a modern square neckline, embellished floral lace, wide shoulder straps and a lustrous Mikado A-line skirt, Stella York Style 7897 is an elegant contemporary wedding dress with pockets, fabric-covered buttons and a magnificent train.
Although the gown was already beautiful, it was approximately one size too large. It required careful resizing through the back zip and embroidered bodice, shortened shoulder straps, internal bust support, bust contouring, a precisely shortened hem and a discreet wedding dress bustle.

The Stella York Wedding Dress at the First Fitting
At the first fitting, I assessed the complete balance of the dress rather than viewing each alteration separately.
The bodice was sitting too loosely around the bride’s bust, waist and back. This prevented the square neckline from sitting securely against her body and reduced the definition through the waist.
The shoulder straps were also too long, allowing the bodice to sit lower than intended. Shortening them would help lift the dress into the correct position, improve the neckline and establish the right level of support before the remaining alterations were completed.
Because the gown was approximately one size too large, it required much more than a simple adjustment at one seam. The entire bodice needed to be carefully reshaped while preserving its symmetry and decorative floral embellishment.
Taking In the Stella York 7897 by One Size
The Stella York wedding dress was taken in by approximately one size through the centre-back zip and embroidered areas of the bodice.
The back zip and covered-button finish had to be carefully removed before the gown could be resized. Sections of decorative lace and embroidery were also lifted wherever they crossed the areas requiring alteration.
Once the internal construction had been reshaped, the zip was precisely reinstated and the covered-button detailing was restored. The embroidery was then carefully repositioned and hand-sewn so that the alteration disappeared naturally into the original design.
This detailed process allowed the bodice to fit much closer to the bride’s figure without interrupting the lace pattern or changing the character of the Stella York gown.
The finished back sat smoothly and securely, while the covered buttons remained beautifully aligned down the dress.
Stella York Bridal Alterations Bromley | Shortening the Shoulder Straps
The wide shoulder straps were shortened to lift and stabilise the bodice.
This brought the square neckline into the correct position and prevented the front of the dress from dropping away from the bride’s body. It also improved the placement of the floral lace around the neckline and created a more balanced transition between the fitted bodice and A-line skirt.
Even a relatively small adjustment to bridal straps can make a considerable difference to the position, comfort and support of an entire wedding dress.
Stella York Bridal Alterations Bromley | Adding Bust Contouring and Internal Support
Although the Stella York bodice had its own structure, the bride needed greater shaping and security around the bust.
Additional internal bust support and careful contouring were incorporated into the dress. The aim was to define and support the bride’s natural shape while preserving the clean, modern appearance of the square neckline.
The internal work improved the fit beneath and around the bust, helped the neckline sit more securely and gave the waist a more sculpted appearance.
Once completed, the bodice felt considerably more supportive. The bride could move confidently without depending on visible underwear or needing to continually adjust her dress.
Stella York Bridal Alterations Bromley | Shortening the Mikado Wedding Dress Hem
The full Mikado skirt was shortened precisely for the bride and her chosen wedding shoes.
Mikado is a beautifully structured fabric that creates a smooth, regal silhouette, but it must be handled carefully during alterations. Every layer of the skirt needed to be measured and shortened evenly so that the hem retained its graceful curve and the gown remained properly balanced. The crin trim sandwiched along the hem was all unpicked and reattached to new length.
The completed length allowed the bride to walk comfortably without losing the dramatic A-line shape of the original design.
Stella York Bridal Alterations Bromley | Creating a Wedding Dress Bustle
The gown featured a wonderful statement train that looked especially beautiful during the ceremony and wedding photographs.
However, the bride also needed to walk, mingle and dance comfortably during the reception. A discreet wedding dress bustle was therefore added to lift the train after the formal part of the day.
The bustle points were positioned carefully to distribute the weight of the Mikado fabric while creating an attractive shape at the back of the gown. This allowed the bride to enjoy the full beauty of her train before securing it safely for the evening celebrations.
The Completed Stella York Wedding Dress
Once all the alterations were finished, the dress was hung so that the bodice, hem and complete silhouette could be checked carefully.
The final photographs show how smoothly the Mikado skirt falls and how beautifully the A-line silhouette is balanced. The reshaped bodice, shortened straps and additional internal support allowed the square neckline to sit securely and symmetrically.
Although extensive work had been completed inside the gown and beneath its decorative details, the finished dress remained completely true to the original Stella York design.
That is always the aim of expertly executed bridal alterations: the workmanship should improve the fit without looking like an alteration has taken place.
Professional Steam Pressing
Once every alteration was completed, the Stella York wedding dress was professionally steam-pressed in preparation for collection.
Special attention was given to the structured Mikado skirt so that it fell smoothly and the full A-line silhouette could open beautifully. The embellished bodice, shortened straps, hem and train were also carefully checked before the gown left my studio, ready for the bride’s journey to her wedding in Devon.
From a Bromley Fitting to a Devon Wedding
After travelling from Bromley to my private Sutton studio for her fittings, the bride wore her completed Stella York 7897 for her beautiful wedding in Devon.
Her wedding-day photograph shows the final result: a closely fitted and supportive bodice, an elegant square neckline, a defined waist and a magnificent train flowing behind her.
The gown fitted securely while still allowing the bride to walk, sit and celebrate comfortably. Seeing the complete journey from the first fitting to the wedding day was incredibly rewarding.
