House of CB Wedding Dress Alterations – Liliana Gown for a Surrey Bride
When this lovely Surrey bride brought her House of CB Liliana wedding dress to my private bridal alterations studio in Sutton, the gown already had the beautiful, feminine silhouette she wanted for her wedding day. However, having purchased her dress online, the fit through the bust and waist needed considerable refinement.
Following an initial pre-fit, we planned a series of House of CB wedding dress alterations to reshape the gown around her figure, improve the internal support and achieve a secure, beautifully balanced fit — while preserving the simplicity and character of the original Liliana design.
House of CB Wedding Dress alterations | Starting with a Bridal Pre-Fit
My bride first came to see me for a pre-fit, which is particularly useful when a wedding dress has been purchased online.
It gave me an opportunity to assess not only what needed altering, but also what didn’t need to be altered.
The length was a perfect example.
Rather than immediately shortening the full skirt, I advised my bride that approximately three-inch heels would bring the dress to the correct finished length.
Once she was wearing the appropriate heel height, we could retain the original hem completely.
This saved an unnecessary alteration while preserving the original finish and beautiful proportions of the House of CB Liliana skirt.
House of CB Wedding Dress alterations | Taking Approximately Four Inches from the Dress
The main alteration involved considerably reducing the dress through the upper body.
Approximately four inches were taken in through the bust and waist, with the alteration carefully blended into the skirt.
Taking this amount from a structured bridal gown requires much more than simply making the side seams smaller.
The bodice needs to remain correctly balanced around the body so that the neckline sits in the right position, the waist remains defined and the transition into the full skirt looks completely natural.
The aim is always for the finished alteration to disappear into the construction of the dress.
Looking at her wedding photographs, you would never know how much work had been carried out — and that is exactly how bridal alterations should look.
House of CB Wedding Dress alterations | Reshaping the Bust and Waist
Achieving the correct fit through the bust was particularly important with the Liliana.
Its clean fabric and structured bodice leave nowhere for an imperfect fit to hide. Any looseness, pulling or imbalance around the bust and waist can become immediately noticeable.
I carefully reshaped the bodice so that it followed my bride’s figure more closely while retaining the lovely shape of the original neckline.
The finished waist became beautifully defined without looking excessively tight, allowing the full skirt to fall naturally from the body.
House of CB Wedding Dress alterations | Shortening the Shoulder Straps
The shoulder straps were also shortened to improve the position of the bodice.
Although this might sound like a relatively small alteration, strap length has a significant effect on the fit of a wedding dress.
Correcting the straps helped lift the bodice into its intended position and improved the relationship between the neckline, bust and waist.
Rather than the straps being responsible for supporting the dress, however, I wanted the support to come primarily from inside the gown.
That led to one of the most important parts of this alteration.
Adding an Inner Corset to the House of CB Liliana
I added a bespoke inner corset to provide considerably more structure and security within the dress.
Internal bridal construction is something the wedding photographs may never reveal, but it can completely change how a bride feels in her gown.
A properly fitted inner corset helps anchor the bodice around the body, distributes the support more effectively and reduces the need for the bride to keep adjusting or pulling up her dress throughout the day.
Importantly, the corset was designed to work inside the existing House of CB gown, rather than changing its external appearance.
From the outside, the dress retained the effortless simplicity that attracted my bride to the Liliana in the first place.
Inside, however, it now had much more support.
Additional Bust Support
Alongside the inner corset, I added additional bust support.
The combination of reshaping the bodice, shortening the straps, adding the corset and refining the bust support meant that all the elements worked together rather than relying on one alteration alone.
This is especially important with a clean, structured neckline.
The finished bodice needed to feel secure enough for an entire wedding day while still looking elegant and natural.
Her wedding photographs show the result beautifully: the neckline remains in position, the waist is defined and the bodice looks smooth from every angle.
Keeping the Original House of CB Hem
One of the most satisfying decisions in this alteration was actually the decision not to alter something.
Because we had discussed her footwear during the pre-fit, my bride was able to choose approximately three-inch heels, which gave us the length we needed.
This meant the original House of CB hem could remain untouched.
Wedding dress hems can involve considerable work, particularly on full skirts, so I never recommend altering a hem unnecessarily.
Good bridal alterations aren’t about carrying out as many changes as possible. They’re about understanding precisely what will give the bride the best overall result.
In this instance, choosing the right shoes achieved exactly what we needed.
Online Wedding Dress Alterations
This gown is also a lovely example of what can be achieved when a wedding dress purchased online needs alterations.
Buying online can give brides access to styles and designers they love, but standard dress sizing cannot account for every individual’s proportions.
A dress may fit at the hips but be too generous at the waist, or fit at the waist while needing substantial adjustment around the bust.
That doesn’t necessarily mean the dress is the wrong choice.
With specialist alterations and, where necessary, additional internal construction, an off-the-peg or online wedding dress can be refined to create a much more individual fit.
For this Surrey bride, taking approximately four inches from her Liliana and rebuilding the internal support transformed how the gown sat on her body.
A Beautifully Fitted House of CB Liliana
The finished wedding photographs are a wonderful demonstration of the difference that careful alterations can make.
From the front, the structured neckline sits cleanly against the body and the waist flows beautifully into the voluminous skirt.
From the side, you can see how well the bust is supported without the bodice appearing restrictive.
And the photographs from the back and three-quarter angles show how neatly the dress follows her waist before opening into that wonderfully full skirt.
Most importantly, she could move naturally in it.
Whether walking through the gardens, sitting with her new husband, holding her skirt or celebrating through the confetti, the dress continued to sit beautifully.
That is always the goal: a wedding dress should fit the bride while allowing the bride to enjoy her wedding.
The Bride’s Lovely Review
After her wedding, my bride very kindly left this review about her experience:
“I came to Zen after buying my wedding dress online which needed some alterations around the bust and waist. Zen was so incredibly brilliant throughout the whole process and is clearly very talented at what she does!
Her attention to detail is amazing and she really went above and beyond to make sure the dress was perfect.
She is also very friendly and kind, and made me feel so comfortable throughout. She even helped me choose a headband to go with my dress which I thought was really sweet.
I would 100% recommend Zen to anyone.”
And yes — I remember the headband! Bridal fittings aren’t always purely about alterations. Sometimes a bride simply wants another experienced opinion on how the entire look is coming together, and I’m always happy to help where I can.
