Leatherhead Wedding Dress Alterations – Beth’s Allure Carmena Transformation
When Beth travelled from Leatherhead to my bridal alterations studio in Sutton, she brought with her a beautiful Allure Carmena wedding dress, purchased from The Outlet by Aurora Bride.
The Carmena is an elegant satin wedding gown with a softly draped strapless bodice, defined waist, full A-line skirt and sweeping train. Its simplicity is part of its beauty, but Beth’s journey with her dress became about much more than achieving the correct fit.
She originally chose her gown in February and arranged to store it securely with me until it was time to begin her alterations.
When Beth returned in July, just weeks before her August wedding, something had changed.
Her dress was the same.
Beth wasn’t.
When Your Wedding Dress No Longer Feels Like You
It happens more often than brides might imagine.
There can be many months between choosing a wedding dress and actually wearing it. During that time, tastes can change and the vision you originally had for your wedding can evolve.
When Beth put her Carmena gown back on in July, she realised that what she wanted from her wedding dress had changed considerably since February.
She later described that moment beautifully in her review:
“When putting it back on, my style and what I wanted had completely changed and I felt at a loss being so close to the day.”
For me, bridal alterations aren’t simply about following a list of predetermined adjustments.
I could see that Beth wasn’t feeling confident in the dress, so rather than continuing with the original plan, we stopped and reassessed what she actually wanted.
I booked her back into my studio the following day so that we could work through it properly.

The challenge was to make meaningful changes while respecting everything that was beautiful about the original Allure Carmena design.
The clean satin gown already had a wonderful silhouette, with diagonal draping through the bodice leading into the full skirt.
Rather than completely redesigning the dress, I concentrated on changing the elements that were preventing Beth from feeling like herself.
The alterations included making the dress smaller and refining the fit, removing boning from the bodice and introducing delicate lace detailing around the neckline.
Each change affected the way the gown looked and felt.
Most importantly, they helped turn the dress Beth had chosen months earlier into the dress she wanted to wear now.
Removing the Boning and Refining the Bodice
Removing structural elements from a wedding dress isn’t simply a case of taking them out.
Boning forms part of the internal architecture of many bridal bodices, so any change has to be considered alongside the outer fabric, lining, seams and the way the dress is supported on the body.
With Beth’s gown, the aim was to create the softer appearance she now wanted while maintaining a beautifully balanced bodice.
The dress was also made smaller and carefully fitted to Beth’s figure.
This was particularly important with the Carmena because its smooth satin and softly draped bodice leave very little room for imperfect fitting.
The finished gown needed to look effortless.
Leatherhead Wedding Dress Alterations | Adding Lace to the Carmena Neckline
One of the most noticeable changes was the addition of delicate lace around the neckline.
The original Carmena has a very clean strapless finish. Beth’s new vision was softer and more romantic, so the lace gave us a way to change the character of the gown without overwhelming its elegant simplicity.
The lace was positioned carefully around the upper edge of the bodice so that it looked integrated into the dress rather than appearing to have been added afterwards.
It’s a relatively small detail when compared with the scale of the entire gown, but visually it made a significant difference.
It also created a beautiful relationship between the dress and Beth’s eventual lace-edged veil.
Finding the Right Wedding Veil
The veil became another important part of Beth’s bridal look.
I suggested somewhere for Beth to find a veil that would complement her newly altered dress, and we were then able to see how the different elements worked together.
The delicate lace around the Carmena neckline and the lace edging of the veil gave the finished outfit a much softer, more romantic feeling.
Even close to the wedding, Beth was still questioning whether she had chosen the right veil length. So the cathedral veil length got ordered and it arrived just in time. I loved the longer length and so did Beth.
As she later joked in her review, I was replying to her WhatsApp messages at “silly o’clock in the morning”.
Sometimes those final details matter enormously to a bride. My job isn’t finished simply because the sewing is finished — I want my brides to leave feeling confident about the complete look they will wear on their wedding day.
Leatherhead Wedding Dress Alterations | Preserving the Beauty of the Allure Carmena
Although Beth’s dress underwent significant changes, I didn’t want the alterations to take away from what made the Carmena such a beautiful gown in the first place.
The sweeping satin skirt remained wonderfully clean and elegant.
From the back, a long line of covered buttons travels down the gown towards the train, creating detail without interrupting the simplicity of the silhouette.
This is also why precision matters so much when altering satin wedding dresses.
With heavily embellished or lace gowns, seams can sometimes be disguised within the design. Smooth satin is much less forgiving. Fit, balance and finishing all need careful attention because the fabric itself reveals the construction.
From February to an August Wedding
One unusual part of Beth’s bridal alterations journey was that I had been looking after her gown for several months.
After choosing her dress in February, Beth stored it securely with me and returned in July ahead of her August wedding.
For brides, having somewhere appropriate to store a wedding gown can remove another worry during the months leading up to the wedding, particularly when the dress has a full skirt and substantial train.
In Beth’s case, it also meant that when she returned and realised her feelings about the gown had changed, we could concentrate immediately on finding a solution.

By the final stages, Beth’s Carmena looked very different through the neckline and bodice from the dress we had started with.
The fit had been refined, the internal structure adjusted and the lace had softened the entire upper section of the gown.
Seeing the dress together with Beth’s veil at the fitting was the point at which the complete bridal look really came together.
Before collection, the gown was carefully steam pressed and prepared, allowing the satin bodice, full skirt and train to fall cleanly for the wedding.
With satin dresses in particular, this final preparation makes an enormous difference to how the gown presents on the day.
Two Leatherhead Brides, Two Completely Different Dresses
There was something particularly special about this wedding for me.
Beth wasn’t the only bride travelling from Leatherhead whose wedding dress I was altering.
I also had the pleasure of working on her wife’s wedding dress.
Although they were preparing for the same wedding and travelling to the same Sutton studio, their dresses — and the work they required — were completely different.
For that reason, I have kept their bridal alteration journeys as two individual case studies, allowing each bride and each gown to have its own story.
Beth’s Wedding Day
And then came the part I always love — seeing the wedding photographs.
The finished Carmena looked beautiful on Beth.
In the natural light, you can really appreciate the simplicity of the satin gown: the fitted and softened bodice, defined waist and full skirt flowing into that wonderful train.
The photograph of Beth standing in the garden in the warm evening light is particularly lovely because it shows the complete silhouette of the dress.
But the most important thing isn’t simply how the gown photographed.
It’s how Beth felt wearing it.
Beth’s Five-Star Review
After the wedding, Beth left me an incredibly touching five-star Google review.
She explained how much her feelings towards the dress had changed between February and July and how worried she had become with the wedding approaching.
One part means an enormous amount to me:
“Zen read my energy and booked me straight back in for an appointment the next day, taking the load to ensure I felt confident on my wedding day.”
And later:
“She completely changed my dress, taking out boning, making it smaller, adding lace and suggesting a place to get a veil.”
Beth finished by saying that without that support she feared she might have felt under-confident, but instead she “truly felt amazing.”
For me, that is what successful bridal alterations are ultimately about.
A wedding dress can fit perfectly according to measurements, but if the bride doesn’t feel like herself when she looks in the mirror, the job isn’t finished.
