This beautiful Kenley Wedding Dress Alterations of an Essense of Australia Kinsley bridal gown shows how couture alterations transformed an oversized gown into a perfectly sculpted wedding dress. My bride travelled from Kenley to my Sutton bridal alterations studio after purchasing her gown, trusting me to achieve the elegant fit she envisioned for her wedding day.
The Kinsley is renowned for its illusion plunge neckline, delicate floral lace, glitter tulle and dramatic low back. While breathtaking, achieving a flawless fit required extensive couture alterations throughout the bodice.
Kenley Wedding Dress Alterations | From Oversized Sample to Couture Fit
At the initial fitting it was immediately clear the gown was significantly too large.
The bodice required an impressive 8-inch reduction, with excess fabric extending through the bust, waist and upper hip. Rather than simply taking the side seams in, the entire bodice had to be carefully rebalanced to maintain the dress’s proportions while preserving the delicate lace appliqués and illusion construction.
The before fitting photographs clearly show the amount of excess fabric temporarily secured with fitting clips before the couture alterations began.

One of the most important parts of these alterations was creating beautiful body contouring rather than simply making the dress smaller.
The alterations included:
- Approximately 8-inch bodice reduction
- Couture under-bust contouring
- Over-bust contouring to sculpt the neckline
- Bodice reshaping through the waist
- Strap shortening for correct bust height
- Careful preservation of the illusion plunge neckline
- Complete rebalancing of the bodice proportions
The result was a gown that fitted securely while maintaining the soft romantic appearance of the original Essense of Australia design.

Like many bridal gowns, the Kinsley features multiple layers of tulle with delicate lace motifs scattered throughout the skirt.
The hem was professionally shortened and re-levelled to ensure the dress floated beautifully over the bride’s wedding shoes while maintaining the graceful movement of the original design.

For the evening reception I created a three-point American bustle.
The bustle lifted the train neatly from the outside while allowing the lace appliqués and flowing tulle to remain beautifully balanced. It also made it comfortable for the bride to walk, dance and celebrate throughout the evening without losing the elegance of the gown.
