Bridesmaid Dress Alterations Warlingham – Complete Back Redesign for a Scotland Wedding
For this Bridesmaid Dress Alterations Warlingham case study, a bridesmaid travelled to my Sutton studio with a soft mint-green gown ahead of a wedding in Scotland. The dress needed far more than simple shortening: the original back would not close comfortably, the armholes were extremely tight, and the upper bodice needed to be repositioned for a better fit.
I hemmed all three skirt layers, lifted the shoulders, lowered and widened the full armholes, reworked the pleated back area and completely redesigned the original high lace-and-button back closure.
The result was a much more comfortable fit and a cleaner, more elegant back while retaining the character of the original dress.

Bridesmaid Dress Alterations Warlingham | The Original High Back Would Not Close
The original design featured a high lace back panel beneath the pleated chiffon, finished with around ten fabric-covered buttons running down the centre above the zip.
Unfortunately, the back could no longer meet properly for the original buttoned lace section and zip arrangement to close as intended.
This was not something that could be resolved neatly with a simple zip adjustment. The upper back and armhole area needed to be reconsidered as a whole.
Completely Redesigning the Back Closure
Instead of trying to force the original high-back construction to work, I redesigned the upper back into a lower, more open back that sat more comfortably on the body.
Elements of the original lace and covered-button detailing were incorporated into the new centre-back finish, helping the redesign remain in keeping with the original gown.
The aim was not simply to make the dress fasten, but to ensure the new back looked intentional and balanced, as though it belonged to the dress from the beginning.
Lowering and Widening the Full Armhole
As part of the reconstruction, I lowered and widened the full armhole, as it was too tight and uncomfortable.
This adjustment improved comfort, allowed better movement and helped the bodice sit more naturally. On dresses with a delicate upper bodice and back detail, the armhole shape is crucial. If it is too tight, it can affect not only comfort but also how the whole upper section pulls and sits.
By lowering and widening the armhole, the gown fitted much better through the upper body and worked more successfully with the redesigned back.
Reworking the Pleated Back
Because the original gown had soft pleated chiffon through the upper back, I also reworked the pleated back section so that it finished neatly with the new shape.
This was an important part of the alteration. Rather than looking as though the original dress had simply been cut away, the pleats were adjusted so they flowed cleanly into the redesigned opening and gave the back a much more polished finish.
Lifting the Shoulders
The shoulders were also lifted to improve the overall position of the bodice.
This helped the front neckline sit better and improved how the dress was supported through the upper body. On a style with soft draping and a low back, even a relatively small shoulder adjustment can make a noticeable difference to the overall fit.

The skirt also required shortening.
This gown had three separate layers, all of which were professionally hemmed to achieve the correct finished length.
Each layer had to be balanced individually so that the skirt retained its original soft movement and flowing appearance.
The Completed Bridesmaid Dress Alterations
This project involved far more than a simple shortening. The completed alterations included:
- Three layers hemmed
- Shoulders lifted
- Full armhole lowered and widened
- Original high lace and buttoned back redesigned
- Back closure completely reconstructed
- Pleated back section reworked for a cleaner finish
- Original lace and covered-button detailing incorporated into the new design
- Soft flowing silhouette retained
The finished gown had a completely reworked back, but the new design still felt in keeping with the style of the dress.
Most importantly, the bridesmaid could travel from Warlingham to Scotland with a dress that fitted comfortably and looked properly finished for the wedding day.
Bridesmaid Dress Alterations Near Warlingham
A bridesmaid dress that does not fit through the zip, back or armhole does not necessarily need replacing.
Depending on the construction, it may be possible to adjust the bodice, reshape the armholes, alter the fastening or completely redesign part of the garment, as with this gown.
My private alterations studio is based in Sutton, and I work with brides, bridesmaids and wedding guests travelling from Warlingham and surrounding areas for both straightforward alterations and more complex garment redesigns.
The aim is always not simply to make a dress fit, but to make the finished result look as though it was always meant to be that way.
What to Bring to Every Bridesmaid Dress Fitting
For the most accurate fit, please bring the shoes you intend to wear on the wedding day to every fitting. Heel height affects the finished hem length, so changing shoes between appointments can alter how the dress falls.
A well-fitting bra should also be worn if the dress requires one, as the shape and position of the bust can affect the bodice, neckline and shoulder fit. If a stick-on bra is the only suitable option, adhesive lift products such as Perky Pear can often provide better support and shaping than a basic stick-on cup.
I can also provide and fit inbuilt bra cups if you would prefer not to wear a bra at all. These can be sewn discreetly into the dress to give shape and support while keeping the neckline and back free from visible bra straps.
If you intend to wear shapewear, please wear the same or very similar shapewear at every fitting. Even small changes underneath a fitted dress can alter how the waist, back, zip and bodice sit.
For best results, I recommend bringing the same:
- Wedding-day shoes
- Bra or Stick on Bra
- Shapewear, if worn
to every fitting, not just the final appointment.
This is particularly important for dresses requiring more complex work such as bodice reshaping, shoulder alterations, armhole adjustments or back redesigns, where the fit needs to remain consistent from one appointment to the next.
