For this Bridal Alterations Carshalton achieving a flawless fit required experience, technical skill and an understanding of how a gown needed to perform throughout the entire wedding day. This beautiful Stella York wedding dress was brought by a bride travelling from Carshalton ahead of her destination wedding at the stunning St. Sophia Chapel at Esperos Village in Rhodes, Greece.
Although the gown already featured elegant Bardot sleeves and beautiful floral lace, several couture alterations were required to improve the fit, increase support and prepare the dress for travelling abroad.
The finished gown provided complete confidence from the ceremony overlooking the Aegean Sea through to the evening reception and dancing.
Couture Bridal Alterations Completed
For this Stella York wedding dress I carried out:
- Converted the original zip fastening into a bespoke lace-up corset tie-back
- Built hidden internal bust support
- Added bespoke modesty panels to the front neckline for slightly more coverage
- Contoured and rebalanced the bodice
- Shortened the outer skirt and multiple inner layers
- Created a bustle for the reception
Each alteration was carefully planned to preserve the original Stella York design while improving comfort, security and overall balance.
Bridal Alterations Carshalton | Converting a Zip into a Corset Tie-Back
One of the most significant alterations was replacing the original zip fastening with a professionally constructed lace-up corset back.
A properly engineered corset conversion is far more than simply inserting eyelets and ribbon.
The back of the gown must be reconstructed so tension is evenly distributed across the bodice while maintaining the dress’s original silhouette. Every panel must remain perfectly balanced to create support without distortion.

The bride loved the sweetheart neckline but wanted a little more coverage across the front.
Rather than altering the character of the dress, I created discreet modesty panels that blended seamlessly into the existing lace design.
Matching lace motifs were carefully positioned so the additional coverage appeared completely original, maintaining the soft romantic look of the Stella York gown while giving the bride extra confidence.
This type of couture refinement is often impossible to detect once completed—which is exactly how it should be.
Preparing a Wedding Dress for a Destination Wedding
A destination wedding requires much more than achieving the perfect fit.
The gown must also travel well and remain comfortable throughout an entire day in a warmer climate.
The skirt and all inner layers were carefully shortened to the correct length while maintaining the balance of the lace appliqués around the hem.
A bustle was also created so the train could be lifted effortlessly after the ceremony, making it easier to walk, celebrate and dance throughout the evening.
