Chiara Boni Dress Alterations | Bespoke Floral Appliqué Created from the Hem

Combining Two Chiara Boni Designs Into One Bespoke Mother of the Groom Dress

When this Mother of the Groom found her Chiara Boni dress, she immediately fell in love with the beautiful lavender colour and flattering wrap neckline. However, after researching Chiara Boni dress alterations, she was recommended to me by the team at Lucindas of Purley with a unique design request.

She had also admired another Chiara Boni design featuring one of the brand’s signature floral appliqués and wondered whether it would be possible to combine her favourite elements from both dresses. The sleeves needed shortening, the dress required hemming to suit her petite frame, and she hoped a bespoke floral detail could be created to echo the design she had fallen in love with.

Using fabric removed during the hemming process, I handcrafted a completely bespoke floral appliqué, transforming the dress into a unique couture piece while preserving the elegant silhouette, wrap neckline and beautiful lavender colour that had originally attracted her to the gown.

The Original Dress Design

Original Chiara Boni wrap dress design chosen by the client in a lavender colourway

The chosen dress featured an elegant wrap neckline, soft draping through the waist and a beautiful lavender shade that perfectly suited the client.

The neckline was one of the main reasons she selected this particular dress, as she preferred it to the neckline on the floral design she had admired.

The Inspiration Design

While she loved her chosen dress, she was also drawn to another Chiara Boni design featuring a dramatic floral appliqué positioned at the waist.

The challenge was to recreate the essence of this signature Chiara Boni detail while ensuring it looked completely natural on the lavender dress.

The goal was never to copy the design exactly, but to create a bespoke version that appeared as though it had always belonged to the garment.

Chiara Boni Dress Alterations | Creating a Bespoke Floral Appliqué from the Hem

Fabric petals cut from the hem of the dress for a bespoke floral appliqué

Because the dress required significant shortening to suit the client’s petite frame, there was enough excess fabric from the hem to create the floral appliqué.

Using fabric removed from the original dress ensured a perfect colour and texture match.

Each petal was individually drafted and cut before being shaped separately.

To create dimension and structure, every petal was stitched through the centre with a small machine-sewn dart. This subtle couture technique encouraged the petals to curve naturally and lift away from the dress, creating a sculptural three-dimensional effect.

The flower was then assembled petal by petal before being carefully hand stitched into position.

Once the individual petals had been constructed, the flower was arranged and refined directly on the dress.

Every layer was positioned by hand to ensure the appliqué followed the existing drape lines of the garment and remained balanced on the client’s frame.

This process allowed the embellishment to feel integrated into the original design rather than appearing as an afterthought.

The Finished Mother of the Groom Dress

The completed dress successfully combined the client’s favourite features from two different Chiara Boni designs.

She retained the elegant wrap neckline and beautiful lavender colour she originally fell in love with while gaining the dramatic floral detail that had inspired her.

Because the flower was created entirely from fabric removed during the alteration process, the finished result appears seamless and completely original to the garment.

Luxury Alterations Beyond Fit

Many people think alterations are simply about shortening hems or adjusting seams.

In reality, couture alterations can involve redesigning and enhancing a garment to create something entirely unique.

This project combined precision fitting, creative design adaptation and couture hand finishing to transform a beautiful designer dress into a one-of-a-kind Mother of the Groom outfit.

The finished floral appliqué was designed specifically for the client and handcrafted from the dress itself, ensuring a result that could never be replicated off the rack.
