Martina Liana Luxury Beaded Wedding Dress Alterations with Couture Front Split & Bespoke Veil

Bride wearing altered beaded wedding dress and bespoke veil at a Portugal destination wedding

When this bride found her wedding dress at Aurora Bride, she fell in love with the intricate beadwork, dramatic silhouette and elegant detailing. She knew this stunning Martina Liana design was the perfect foundation for her wedding day look. Her Luxury Beaded Wedding Dress Alterations included a couture front split, beadwork reconstruction, bodice contouring, cup reduction, hem reconstruction and a bespoke cathedral veil before her destination wedding in Portugal.

The completed gown would later travel from my Sutton, Surrey studio to Vilamoura in the Algarve, Portugal, where the bride celebrated a beautiful destination wedding.

However, achieving the fit and design she envisioned required far more than standard bridal alterations. Alongside extensive fitting work, the gown would undergo a significant transformation, including the creation of a couture front split, contouring throughout the bodice, alterations to the heavily beaded hem and the creation of a bespoke cathedral veil.

One of the bride’s requests was to add a front split to the gown. While she was initially happy for the existing beaded trim to remain on only one side of the new opening, I felt this would leave the design looking visually unbalanced.

Because the gown featured strong symmetrical beadwork throughout the bodice and skirt, I advised that the split would look far more elegant if the detailing was balanced on both sides. The bride trusted my recommendation and ordered additional lace appliqués and embellishments directly from the designer so the design could be completed correctly.

To create the split, the original beaded trim was carefully incorporated into one side of the opening. Matching appliqués and embellishments were then meticulously positioned on the opposite side to mirror the design and create complete symmetry.

When the alterations were completed, the bride told me she was delighted she had followed my advice, as the finished split looked as though it had always been part of the original gown design.

This is often where couture bridal alterations differ from standard alterations. Sometimes the most important part of the process is not simply carrying out a request, but understanding how a design should be adapted so the finished gown looks intentional, balanced and beautifully proportioned.

The gown featured extensive beadwork, lace appliqué and embellishment throughout the bodice and skirt.

Before any fitting alterations could begin, sections of beadwork and appliqué had to be carefully removed to access the construction beneath. Once the alterations were completed, each section was meticulously reapplied by hand.

The alterations included:

• Taking the gown in through the bodice and waist

• Tapering the side seams for a more sculpted silhouette

• Cup reduction to achieve better proportion and support

• Additional contouring through the bodice for a more flattering fit

• Removal and replacement of beadwork and lace appliqués to conceal alteration seams

Working on heavily embellished wedding dresses requires patience, precision and a thorough understanding of bridal construction to ensure the original design remains seamless after alteration.

Luxury Beaded Wedding Dress Alterations | Shortening a Martina Liana Heavily Beaded Hem

One of the most labour-intensive aspects of this project was shortening the heavily embellished signature style Martina Liana hem. This gown presented an additional challenge, as the newly created front split meant the lace motifs and beadwork had to flow naturally around both sides of the opening while maintaining balance and symmetry throughout the design.

The image below shows the same gown during the hem reconstruction process before the front split was created. Lace motifs and embellishments were carefully removed, repositioned and hand-finished to recreate the original border after shortening.

Unlike a plain wedding dress, heavily beaded gowns often require lace motifs, appliqués and scalloped edging to be carefully removed before the hem can be adjusted. Once the dress had been shortened to the correct length, the lace and embellishments were meticulously repositioned and hand-finished to recreate the original border.

This couture approach allowed the gown to retain its intricate detailing and luxury finish while being perfectly proportioned to the bride’s height.

Bespoke Cathedral Veil

To complete the bridal look, I also designed and created a bespoke cathedral veil.

The veil was designed specifically to complement the intricate lace motifs and embellishment patterns found throughout the gown. By echoing the detailing within the dress, the veil created a seamless transition between gown and accessories while adding dramatic impact for the ceremony.

The finished veil beautifully framed the train and enhanced the overall silhouette of the gown.

The Finished Transformation

With the alterations complete, the gown featured a beautifully balanced front split, sculpted silhouette, refined bodice fit and a bespoke veil designed specifically for the dress.

Every adjustment was made with the goal of preserving the integrity of the original design while creating a gown that felt uniquely personal to the bride.

Following months of careful alterations and bespoke finishing, the gown travelled to Vilamoura in the Algarve, Portugal, for the bride’s destination wedding.

The sculpted fit, balanced front split and bespoke cathedral veil came together beautifully, creating a look that felt both elegant and dramatic while remaining true to the original character of the gown.

The Algarve’s golden coastline provided the perfect backdrop for the dramatic cathedral veil and newly created front split. The sunset portraits beautifully captured the movement of the veil and showcased the gown exactly as it had been envisioned throughout the alteration process.

Shortly after the wedding, the bride sent me a lovely message:

“I received so so many compliments on my dress, you did really well. Thank you so much.”

Feedback like this is always the most rewarding part of my work and a reminder that sometimes the smallest design decisions can make the biggest difference to the finished result.
