Evening Wear Alterations Banstead – Meshki Cora Neckline Redesign

This Evening Wear Alterations Banstead case study features a beautiful black Meshki Cora Satin Tie Back Maxi Slipbrought to my Sutton alterations studio by a client travelling from Banstead. The dress had a sleek, figure-skimming silhouette, delicate spaghetti straps and a dramatic lace-up back, but the very low front neckline did not give my client the coverage or security she wanted. I reshaped the bust and completely redesigned the front neckline, creating five bespoke rhinestone bands from scratch to give the dress a more secure yet still glamorous finish.
Rather than simply adding a conventional modesty panel, I decided to change and redesign the front neckline. The alteration began with the fit of the bust itself. I created a carefully positioned pleat through the bust area to remove excess and help the front sit more neatly against the body. With such a low neckline, even a small amount of looseness can make a dress feel much more revealing, so improving the fit first was essential before I began adding any new detail.
Evening Wear Alterations Banstead | Changing the Original Meshki Cora Neckline

The original Meshki Cora dress had a clean, plunging satin neckline with only the minimal detailing of the original design. There were no rhinestones across the front of the dress. All of the crystal work seen in my finished alteration was designed and added by me.
My client wanted additional coverage, but I did not want to close the neckline with a solid piece of fabric. The dress was very sleek and delicate, particularly with its fine straps and open lace-up back, and a conventional modesty panel would have changed its character considerably. Instead, I decided to create a series of narrow sparkling bands across the plunge so that the neckline would remain open and elegant while offering much more coverage.
Evening Wear Alterations Banstead | Making the Rhinestone Detail From Scratch

The five rhinestone bands were individually constructed rather than simply sewing ready-made trim straight onto the dress. I first made very narrow supporting straps from fine tulle. I cut the tulle slightly narrower than the rhinestone trim so that once the crystals were positioned on top, the supporting fabric would be almost invisible.
I deliberately left the tulle longer at both ends. This gave me enough fabric to work with when attaching each finished piece securely inside the neckline and meant that I did not have to rely on sewing directly through the visible rhinestones.
The rhinestone trim was then carefully positioned and glued onto each tulle support. Once the glue had completely dried, I went back over the pieces and hand-basted them securely, adding another level of support before they were fitted into the dress. It is a small detail that cannot really be seen once the dress is being worn, but this hidden construction is important if the finished alteration is going to sit neatly and feel secure.
Fitting Five Individual Rhinestone Bands

Once the five crystal bands were prepared, I fitted them individually across the front neckline. The spacing needed to look balanced from top to bottom, but because the neckline becomes narrower as it reaches the centre front, the strips could not simply be measured and attached at equal intervals.
Each band needed to follow the shape of the bust and sit at the correct tension. If one was fitted too tightly, it could pull and distort the satin neckline. If it was too loose, it could sag. I therefore positioned and adjusted every strip individually until the five rows followed the neckline naturally.
The finished effect gave the client considerably more coverage but still allowed some skin to show between the rhinestone bands. This kept the front light and glamorous rather than making it appear covered up.
Evening Wear Alterations Banstead | Preserving the Beautiful Tie-Back Design

One of the most distinctive features of the Meshki Cora Satin Tie Back Maxi Slip is its dramatic open back. Fine straps lace from side to side across the lower back, creating a delicate corset-style effect while the rest of the dress remains very simple and fluid.
I particularly wanted the redesigned front to work with this feature rather than compete with it. The narrow rhinestone bands have a similar light, strappy quality, so the dress still feels balanced from front to back.
The result is very different from placing a solid fabric insert into the front. The neckline has been changed substantially, but the overall character of the Meshki Cora has been preserved.
A Bespoke Evening Dress Alteration for a Banstead Client
This alteration is a good example of why occasionwear alterations are not always just about shortening a hem or taking in a side seam. Sometimes a client loves a dress but one particular design feature simply does not work for the way she wants to wear it.

For my Banstead client, the solution involved both technical fitting and creative dressmaking. I reshaped the bust with a carefully placed pleat, redesigned the plunging front neckline and then constructed five individual rhinestone straps using fine tulle, crystal trim, adhesive and hand sewing before attaching them securely to the dress.
The alteration solved the practical issue of coverage while also creating something decorative and unique.
The Finished Meshki Cora Transformation
The finished dress still retained everything that made the original Meshki Cora attractive: the long black satin silhouette, fine straps, elegant open back and lace-up detailing. The biggest transformation was at the front, where the original plunging neckline had become a completely new feature.
The five rows of rhinestones added sparkle against the black satin and made the neckline feel much more secure without looking heavy. Instead of appearing like an obvious modesty alteration, the crystal work became part of the design itself.
This is the kind of alteration I particularly enjoy because it combines fitting, construction, hand-finishing and creative problem-solving. The aim is always to respect the original garment while adapting it so the person wearing it feels comfortable and confident.
