Nadine Merabi Alterations | Mother of the Bride Two-Piece Transformation

Specialist Nadine Merabi Alterations for a Mother of the Bride
This Nadine Merabi Alterations project involved a striking Mother of the Bride ensemble consisting of the Faye Top and matching Charlotte Trousers in lilac. My client had an extremely hour glass silhouette. While the outfit accommodated the bust with enough cover, extensive alterations were required throughout both garments to achieve the perfecr fit, balance and proportions. Both Mum abd Daughter have been my regular clients for more than twelve years and it was an honour to Do Gemmaโs Catherine Deane Bridal Transformations.
The outfit needed significant contouring through the bodice, hidden internal support construction, reconstruction of the dramatic waterfall feature and extensive tailoring to the trousers. The result was a beautifully fitted outfit that retained all of the elegance of the original Nadine Merabi design while fitting comfortably and proportionally to the wearer.
Nadine Merabi Faye Top Alterations
The Faye Top was the most technically demanding element of the outfit.

Designed with a structured strapless bodice and dramatic waterfall train feature, the garment required extensive contouring throughout the under-bust and waist areas to create a secure and flattering silhouette.
Like many women with fuller bust proportions, the wearer had selected sizing to accommodate the bust, leaving excess fabric through the body of the garment. Significant reshaping all along the bust seam was required to achieve the correct fit while maintaining the clean architectural lines of the waterfall drape of the original design .
Hidden Internal Support Construction

In addition to contouring the bodice, I constructed a discreet internal support system within the garment.
This allowed bra straps to be secured inside the top without becoming visible externally, providing additional comfort, support and confidence while preserving the elegant strapless appearance of the design.
Although invisible once completed, this type of internal engineering often makes a significant difference to both comfort and wearability.
Reconstructing the Waterfall Feature

One of the most challenging aspects of the alterations involved the dramatic waterfall feature attached to the Faye Top. The panel was constructed with a fully enclosed bagged finish and rounded edges. To bring the proportions into balance with the wearer’s petite frame, the entire waterfall feature had to be carefully shortened by approximately twelve inches and reconstructed while preserving its original movement, shape and finish.
The result retained all of the drama of the original design while sitting far more harmoniously against the wearer’s proportions.
Dance Loop Installation
For practicality during the wedding celebrations, a concealed dance loop in matching fabric was also added to the train feature. This allows the draped panel to be lifted when required, making movement easier during the reception while preserving the elegance of the design.
Nadine Merabi Charlotte Trouser Alterations

The matching Charlotte Trousers required extensive tailoring to achieve the correct fit and balance with the reconstructed top. Approximately two inches were removed through the waist, requiring the waistband to be completely detached before alterations could begin.
Because the zip was positioned within the side seam, the trousers could not be adjusted using a conventional centre-back alteration. Instead, excess fabric was carefully removed through the side seams before the zip was reattached and the waistband reconstructed.
Full Leg Tapering
The trousers were then fully tapered throughout the leg to create a cleaner silhouette and improve overall proportion. Although visually understated once completed, significant pattern balancing is required when undertaking alterations of this scale to ensure the trousers continue to hang correctly after reshaping.
As the Charlotte Trousers were fully lined, both the outer fabric and lining required alteration through the inseam and outseam to maintain the balance and structure of the garment. Each layer was carefully reshaped and reconstructed to mirror the other, ensuring the trousers retained their original drape and movement. Both the outer trouser and lining were then individually rehemmed to the required length, creating a polished finish that sat perfectly with the wearer’s chosen footwear.
The finished result created a far more elegant line while maintaining the original character of the design.
A Complete Mother of the Bride Transformation

What made this project particularly rewarding was the way both garments had to function together as a single cohesive outfit.
The Faye Top required extensive contouring, internal support construction and reconstruction of the waterfall feature, while the Charlotte Trousers underwent significant tailoring through the waist and leg.
The completed ensemble retained all of the drama and sophistication of the original Nadine Merabi design while fitting comfortably and proportionally to the wearer.
Like many luxury occasionwear alterations, much of the work became invisible once completed, yet involved extensive reconstruction beneath the surface to achieve the final result.
When One Transformation Leads to Another

The finished outfit attracted considerable attention after the wedding. In fact, another Mother of the Groom later approached me after seeing photographs of the completed ensemble and commissioned alterations to the very same Nadine Merabi design, requesting a similar approach to fit, contouring and proportion balancing.
For a dressmaker, there are few greater compliments than seeing a client inspired to choose the same design after seeing the finished result.
