Pronovias Lace Wedding Dress Alterations Warlingham | Invisible Shortening Technique

This Pronovias lace dress was altered for a Warlingham bride . Sometimes a wedding dress reconstruction is often required when a wedding dress just cannot be shortened from the hem due to integrated crin, embroidery or appliqué and glue.

When the Hem absolutely Cannot Be Altered

Not all wedding dresses can be shortened from the hem — and this Pronovias gown was a perfect example.

The hem featured dense crin embroidery combined with lace appliqué, It also had fabric glue spots integrated in such a way that it was impossible to unpick without damaging the structure and design of the dress. The lace, embroidery, and edge were all working together as one finished element.

Altering it conventionally would have compromised the entire gown.

The Solution: Hidden Shortening Above the Hem

Instead of touching the hem, I created a concealed alteration line around the knee area.

This required:

  • Fully removing sections of lace appliqué by hand
  • Creating a new internal shortening line within the skirt
  • Reshaping the understructure to maintain the fishtail silhouette
  • Reapplying the lace motifs individually to restore the design

The aim was complete invisibility — no visible join, no disruption to the pattern, and no loss of detail.

Why This Technique Was Essential

With crin embroidery at the hem, there was no safe way to:

  • Lift and reset the edge
  • Recreate the finish
  • Or preserve the original structure

This is where experience matters.

Knowing when not to touch the hem is just as important as knowing how to alter it.

By shortening from above instead, the original hemline — and all its intricate detail — remained completely intact.

Lace Reapplication: The Critical Stage

Once the dress was shortened, the lace had to be rebuilt seamlessly.

Each appliqué was:

  • Carefully repositioned
  • Hand stitched back into the design
  • Blended to follow the original flow of the gown

This is what transforms an alteration into a couture-level finish.

The Result

The finished dress retained:

  • The original crin-embroidered hem
  • The full lace design continuity
  • A balanced and perfectly fitted fishtail shape

There is no visible evidence of where the dress was shortened — only a flawless result.
