Reversible Tartan Dress & Bespoke Dressmaking in Sutton, Surrey
Designed for Two Moments in One Day
This reversible tartan dress was created for a client from Chipstead Village, designed to move seamlessly between two moments in one day.

Created as a bespoke piece in my Sutton, Surrey studio, it was designed to transition from a funeral to the gathering afterwards, without needing a change.
The design needed to transition seamlessly between two very different moments, while maintaining elegance throughout. To achieve this, the dress was constructed as a fully reversible piece.

On one side, a deep black silk offers a more understated, respectful look. Turned inside out, the dress reveals a vibrant blue Flower of Scotland tartan silk — bringing energy, character and a completely different mood for the after gathering.
At the heart of the design is a full double circle skirt. This cut creates natural volume and movement, allowing the dress to feel light and fluid when worn.
As the wearer moves, the skirt lifts, flows and settles effortlessly — creating a silhouette that comes alive beyond a static image.

The reversible tartan dress was engineered to function seamlessly on both sides without compromising structure or design. The contrast between the two sides was essential. The black silk creates a more understated, refined look, while the tartan introduces structure and vibrancy.
Both sides needed to hold their own visually, while functioning as one complete garment.

Designing a reversible garment at this level requires precision and a completely different approach to construction.
Every seam is enclosed. Every finish must be clean on both sides. Every detail must work twice — without compromise.

The double circle skirt in its early stage — drafted and cut to achieve balanced volume and movement before construction begins.
This stage is where proportion and structure are resolved, long before the garment comes together.

The most technically challenging aspect of this piece was the construction of the shawl collar.
A traditional shawl collar is not designed to be reversible, so the structure had to be re-engineered.
The collar was constructed to visually mimic a continuous shawl collar on both sides, while internally resolving the structure through the centre front. The V shape was carefully anchored into the centre front seam, allowing it to read as part of the collar from either direction.
This required precise alignment and control to ensure both sides maintained a clean, uninterrupted line.

The bodice was carefully balanced to support the fullness of the skirt, ensuring the silhouette remains flattering while allowing the movement to remain the focal point.
This piece reflects a deeper approach to bespoke dressmaking — where design is not only about appearance, but about how a garment functions, adapts and moves through real moments in someone’s life.
