Martina Liana Bridal Alterations for a Banstead Bride

This Martina Liana Bridal Alterations Banstead case study follows Catherine’s journey from her first fitting through to her wedding day. When Catherine, a Banstead bride and co-owner of Scoop Sisters Ice Cream, chose her Martina Liana wedding dress, she fell in love with its sparkling lace, exposed corset-inspired boning and detachable sleeves. However, achieving the perfect fit required extensive specialist bridal alterations.

Transforming the Fit of a Martina Liana Wedding Dress

Catherine travelled from Banstead to my private Sutton, Surrey studio seeking a more sculpted fit through the bodice, improved support through the bust and a refined fit through the detachable sleeves. While the gown was beautiful, the original proportions required significant reshaping to achieve the finished result seen in her wedding photographs.

Like many highly detailed designer gowns, however, the dress required significant alterations to achieve the fit, support and silhouette she wanted for her wedding day.

Martina Liana Bridal Alterations | Reshaping the Bust for a More Balanced Silhouette For A Banstead Bride.

One of the most important aspects of this alteration was the fit through the bust.

The original cups were considerably too large for Catherine’s frame, creating excess volume through the sweetheart neckline and preventing the bodice from sitting correctly against the body.

Rather than simply taking in seams, the internal cups were carefully reduced and reshaped to better suit her proportions. This specialist alteration allowed the neckline to sit smoothly against the body while improving support and creating a far more balanced silhouette.

The bodice was then carefully contoured throughout to create a closer fit while maintaining the integrity of the exposed boning and intricate embellishment.

Martina Liana Bridal Alterations Banstead | Reconstructing the Sleeves for a Couture Glove Fit

The detachable sleeves required extensive reconstruction.

The original sleeves sat much looser than Catherine wanted and did not complement the fitted silhouette of the gown. Each sleeve was carefully dismantled and reshaped to create a much slimmer glove-like fit through the arm.

Working on heavily embellished lace sleeves requires considerable precision, as every adjustment must preserve the placement of the lace motifs while ensuring comfort and movement.

The finished sleeves created a far more refined appearance and beautifully complemented the sculpted bodice.

Martina Liana Bridal Alterations Banstead | Hemming and a Three-Point Bustle

The gown was also shortened to the correct finished length.

With a detailed train and fitted silhouette, careful hemming was required to preserve the proportions of the design while ensuring comfortable movement throughout the day.

To complete the alterations, a three-point bustle was added. This allowed the train to be lifted securely for the evening celebrations while maintaining the elegance of the gown.

A well-designed bustle should be practical without distracting from the dress itself, and the finished bustle blended seamlessly into the design.

Final Preparation Before the Wedding Day

Following the alterations, both the gown and veil were professionally steamed and prepared for collection.

Heavily embellished wedding dresses often require careful finishing before the wedding day to ensure the lace, sparkle and veil photograph beautifully.

By collection day, the gown had been fully fitted, the internal cups reshaped, the sleeves reconstructed, the hem completed, the bustle installed and the entire look professionally finished.

The Finished Result

Following the alterations, the transformation was significant.

The reshaped bust provided improved support and proportion, the reconstructed sleeves created a couture glove-like fit and the contoured bodice enhanced the overall silhouette of the gown.

Most importantly, Catherine felt comfortable, confident and beautiful on her wedding day.

The finished result looked as though the dress had been made specifically for her.

Kind Words from Catherine

“Zen was absolutely brilliant! I took my wedding dress in feeling very unhappy with the fit (it was quite a big job given the detail of the dress) but Zen handled it with ease and perfection. The alterations were flawless, and I couldn’t be happier. A very, very, very happy bride!”

Receiving feedback like this is always incredibly rewarding.

As a business owner which is based in Wimbledon, Catherine understood the value of specialist craftsmanship and attention to detail. Following her alterations journey, she later recommended her cousin, Rebecca, for her Stella York bridal alterations, and another family member is already booked for their wedding in 2027

Referrals like these are one of the greatest compliments a bridal dressmaker can receive.
