Transforming an Essense of Australia Wedding Dress with a Low Back Redesign, Custom Straps and Couture Bridal Alterations
Every bride wants her wedding dress to feel like her own. While designer gowns provide a beautiful starting point, expert bridal alterations can transform a dress into something completely unique.

This bride purchased an Essense of Australia wedding dress through Aurora Bride and travelled for specialist bridal alterations to achieve the look she envisioned. Although she loved the lace detailing and silhouette of the gown, she wanted significant design changes that would completely alter the appearance of the dress.
The finished result included a dramatic low back, redesigned straps, hidden internal support, silhouette contouring, lace hem reconstruction and a hidden bustle system.

Essense Of Australia Wedding Dress Couture Alterations | Redesigning the Back Neckline
One of the most significant changes was the complete redesign of the back neckline.
The original dress featured a much higher back, but the bride wanted a more elegant and contemporary low-back silhouette. Lowering the back of a wedding dress is a complex alteration because much of the original support structure is often removed in the process.
Careful pattern adaptation and reconstruction were required to reshape the gown while maintaining stability and comfort.
Essense Of Australia Wedding Dress Couture Alterations | Replacing the Original Straps
The original gown featured delicate beaded spaghetti straps. While beautiful, they were not the style the bride wanted for her wedding day.

The straps were completely redesigned and replaced with wider lace straps that blended naturally into the new back design. This alteration dramatically changed the character of the gown and created a softer, more romantic look while improving balance and support.
Essense Of Australia Wedding Dress Couture Alterations | Hidden Internal Support Construction
Lowering the back neckline created an additional challenge: maintaining support without visible straps or structure.
To achieve this, I built a hidden internal elastic support system within the gown itself. This invisible construction provides security and comfort while remaining completely concealed beneath the finished dress.
Many of the most important bridal alterations are never seen, but they are often what make a gown feel secure and comfortable throughout an entire wedding day.

Reshaping the Fit
The dress was also taken in by approximately two sizes to create a more sculpted silhouette.
Additional contouring work was carried around bust and bum area to improve the fit through the waist, hips and lower back. These alterations helped create a cleaner line throughout the gown and enhanced the overall proportions of the design.
The goal was not simply to make the dress smaller, but to create a couture-level fit tailored specifically to the bride’s shape.
Lace Hem Reconstruction
The intricate lace detailing and glitter tulle layers meant the hem could not simply be shortened.
The lace motifs were carefully removed before the gown was shortened to the correct length. Once the hem had been reconstructed, the lace was reapplied by hand to recreate the original designer finish.

This process preserves the beauty of the lace pattern while ensuring the proportions of the gown remain balanced.
Hidden Bustle Installation
A hidden bustle system was incorporated to allow the bride to comfortably manage the train during the reception.

The bustle was designed to remain discreet while preserving the elegant shape of the gown when lifted.
The Finished Transformation
This project demonstrates how bridal alterations can go far beyond simple fitting adjustments.
Through structural reconstruction, design modifications and couture-level finishing, this Essense of Australia gown was transformed into a dress that reflected the bride’s personal style while maintaining the beauty of the original design.
From the redesigned low back and custom lace straps to the hidden support system, contouring, lace reconstruction and bustle installation, every alteration contributed to a completely personalised bridal look.
The finished result looked as though it had been designed this way from the beginning.
