Hand Painted Carnation Silk Scarf – The Process Behind the Piece
A hand painted carnation silk scarf, developed from initial resist drawing through to layered colour and final silk composition.
The Beginning: Drawing with Resist
Every piece begins quietly.
For this scarf, the carnations were first drawn in resist — not simply outlined, but guided across the silk in a way that allowed the composition to evolve naturally. The butterflies were placed sparingly, creating moments of pause within the movement of the florals.
At this stage, the silk holds only structure.
Everything else is yet to unfold.

Colour is never applied all at once.
Soft washes of pink were introduced gradually, building depth petal by petal. Some parts of the petals in the carnations were allowed to remain lighter, others developed into richer tones, creating variation and rhythm across the length of the silk.
This layering is what gives the final piece its sense of movement and depth— a design that shifts rather than sits still.

Once the florals began to form, stems and leaves were introduced to anchor the piece.
These elements are intentionally understated, allowing the carnations to remain the focal point while still giving the design balance. The butterflies were then refined, bringing subtle contrast and delicacy to the overall composition.
The Final Flow
The background is always the final decision.
Rather than overpowering the design, it was introduced as a fluid wash — soft, atmospheric, and intentionally unpredictable. This is where silk becomes something entirely different from other mediums.
The dye moves.
It settles.
It creates its own softness.
The Finished Piece
What remains is not just the design, but the process within it.
From the first resist line to the final wash of colour, each stage becomes part of the finished scarf — carried in the movement of the silk, revealed differently each time it is worn.
A piece that exists between control and freedom.
