Bespoke dressmaking in Sutton, Surrey requires a couture-level approach, combining design, structure and craftsmanship.
This bespoke royal blue silk evening dress and shawl were created entirely from scratch in my Sutton studio, serving clients across Kingston, Wimbledon, Crystal Palace, South London, Wallington, Croydon and surrounding areas.
Couture Silk Fabric Development & Custom Dyeing
The fabric itself was developed specifically for this piece.
A custom royal blue tone was achieved through bespoke dyeing, using pure silk crinkle chiffon layered with pure silk charmeuse to create depth, movement and a rich, luminous finish.
Calico Fitting & Bespoke Dress Construction
The process began with calico development, where each panel was shaped and refined directly on the body to establish the silhouette, structure and proportion of the gown.
Once finalised, the gown was constructed in silk, following the exact lines developed during the fitting stage to create a clean, elongated form that contours the body while allowing fluid movement through the lower half.
Corsetry, Boning & Internal Dress Structure
The construction of the dress was highly structured beneath its fluid exterior.
The upper bodice was built with an integrated corset, fully boned to provide support, shape and stability, with additional built-in bra support to ensure a secure and sculpted fit.
The skirt was designed with six splits, each panel constructed in three layers of silk.
This created depth and movement within the design, allowing the dress to flow dynamically while maintaining balance and control through the silhouette.
Hand-Embellished Swarovski Crystal & Rhinestone Detailing
The bodice and split were hand-embellished with over 2000 Swarovski crystals.
Alongside this, rhinestone round flat-back crystals (5mm, crystal with foiled backing) were individually hand-sewn into the design.
The combination of crystal types created variation in light reflection and depth, enhancing the overall couture finish.
Each element was placed with precision to define the contours of the dress while catching light with every movement.
Bespoke Silk Shawl with Hand-Tasselled Crystal Work
To complete the ensemble, a bespoke silk shawl was created, cut in a generous 2 metre by 1 metre proportion, allowing it to be styled fluidly as a scarf or draped as an evening shawl.
The shawl was hand-embellished with over 4000 Swarovski bicone crystals, applied using a traditional hand-tasselling technique.
Each strand was individually constructed and secured, allowing the crystals to move freely and create a fluid, shimmering effect.
The combination of structure in the gown and movement in the shawl created a balanced, dynamic silhouette.
Couture Dress Redesign & Embellishment Refinement
A year later, my client returned.
Having worn the piece for several occasions, she wanted to refine the embroidery into something more contemporary, while preserving the essence of the original design.
The crystal work was carefully reworked into a cleaner, more linear design with a sharper, modern finish.
This involved the delicate removal and repositioning of hand-sewn crystals, ensuring the new design integrated seamlessly into the existing structure of the gown.
