When this bride found her Stella York gown, she loved the silhouette but wanted a far more dramatic, luxurious look than the original design offered. Rather than making simple fit adjustments, this Stella York Bridal transformation involved a complete couture transformation. The original sleeveless gown was redesigned with a bespoke illusion neckline, fitted illusion sleeves, a hand-built lace collar, extensive lace enhancement throughout the train, and structural bridal alterations to create a beautifully sculpted fit.

The result was a completely bespoke wedding dress while retaining the original elegance of the Stella York design.

Before: Stella York 6916

The original Stella York 6916 featured:

  • Sleeveless illusion bodice
  • Open illusion back
  • Minimal lace placement
  • Lightly embellished train
  • Standard lace distribution throughout the gown

While beautiful, the bride wanted a more luxurious and couture appearance with significantly more lace detail and greater coverage.

Stella York Bridal Transformation | Creating a Bespoke Illusion Neckline, Sleeves and Collar

The most significant part of this transformation was the complete redesign of the bodice.

A bespoke illusion neckline was created to provide full front coverage while maintaining the delicate transparency of the original design. Fitted illusion sleeves were individually constructed and carefully balanced with the existing lace motifs to ensure they appeared as though they had always been part of the gown.

To further personalise the design, I created a distinctive pointed V-shaped sleeve finish featuring a hand-crocheted finger loop. This couture detail allowed the bride to wear the sleeves elegantly over her hands, creating a graceful, elongated silhouette that perfectly complemented both the gown and the bride herself.

To complete the design, I hand-built an illusion collar using heavily beaded lace appliqués. Every motif was individually positioned and stitched by hand to create a seamless transition between the original dress and the newly created neckline.

This process required extensive hand-finishing to ensure the lace appeared as though it had always been part of the original gown.

The bride also wanted the gown to feel richer and more heavily embellished than the original Stella York design.

To achieve this, approximately fifty pairs of heavily beaded lace appliqués were individually hand stitched around the entire train and hem.

The lace was mirrored from left to right to maintain symmetry and create a couture finish.

Additional lace was added:

  • Around the train perimeter
  • Along the front hem
  • Through the side sections
  • Across the rear train panels

This dramatically increased the visual impact of the gown while preserving balance and elegance.

Alongside the design changes, the gown underwent extensive fitting work.

Alterations included:

  • Taking the gown in by one dress size
  • Bust support enhancements
  • Contouring through the bodice
  • Waist shaping
  • Hip contouring
  • Precision fitting throughout the silhouette
  • Professional bridal hem adjustments

These structural alterations ensured the dress fitted beautifully while supporting the bride comfortably throughout her wedding day.

The train was carefully reshaped and enhanced with additional lace placement to create a more luxurious finish.

A bustle system was added to allow the bride to move comfortably between the ceremony and reception while preserving the elegant line of the gown.

The additional lace detailing transformed the train into one of the most striking features of the finished dress.

The Finished Transformation

What began as a Stella York 6916 gown evolved into a completely bespoke bridal design.

Through extensive hand application of lace, a custom illusion neckline, fitted sleeves, couture collar construction, structural contouring and luxury finishing techniques, the dress became a unique gown tailored specifically to the bride’s vision.

This is the difference between altering a wedding dress and completely transforming one.
