Vivienne Westwood Dress Alterations | How it all began
Vivienne Westwood Dress Alterations require far more than standard tailoring, particularly when working with the designer’s signature sculptural draping, asymmetric folds and architectural construction. This Mother of the Bride dress arrived at my studio with her beautiful Vivienne Westwood Panther checked Woven midi dress needing intricate adjustments around the neckline, shoulders and upper bodice to accommodate and flatter a fuller bust, all while preserving the original balance and movement of the garment. With no straightforward shoulder seam to alter through, the work demanded a highly technical couture approach to ensure the dress retained the unmistakable elegance of the original Vivienne Westwood design without losing its iconic drape.
My client had previously trusted me with alterations for both of her daughters’ wedding dresses, so when it came to preparing her own outfit for her daughter’s wedding, she returned to my Sutton Surrey studio with this striking Vivienne Westwood design.
The dress featured the unmistakable sculptural draping and architectural folds associated with Vivienne Westwood, but the alterations required were far from straightforward.
Vivienne Westwood Dress Alterations | Working With It’s Signature Construction
Unlike a conventional fitted dress, this garment had no simple shoulder seam to alter through. Much of the structure was created through tension, drape and carefully engineered folds rather than traditional seam placement.
This meant the neckline and shoulder alterations became highly technical.
The upper bodice needed careful reshaping to accommodate and flatter a fuller bust while still preserving the original balance of the dress. With a garment like this, even small structural adjustments can distort the drape, collapse the folds, or change the silhouette entirely if they are not handled correctly.
Every alteration therefore had to be approached almost sculpturally, refining the fit while ensuring the dress still looked visually untouched by anyone other than Westwood itself.

One of the most important aspects of this alteration was maintaining the integrity of the original design.
The draped neckline, asymmetrical folds and body contouring all relied on balance and proportion. The challenge was not simply making the dress fit smaller or larger, but allowing it to sit securely and elegantly on the body without losing the fluid architectural movement that defines this style of garment.
Careful adjustments around the shoulders, neckline and upper bodice allowed the dress to retain its signature shape while becoming far more supportive and comfortable to wear.
