Sometimes brides fall in love with a dress long before it fits them properly.

The Original Monreal Iris Gown

This sample sale wedding dress alterations London story involved the complete restructuring of a discontinued Monreal Iris gown discovered through an outlet bridal boutique after months of searching for the right dress.

After trying on countless gowns, the bride completely fell in love with this particular design. Although the dress was significantly oversized, she knew it was the one she wanted to wear on her wedding day.

Originally purchased as a size 14 sample gown, the dress required far more than standard sizing adjustments alone. Through a series of private bridal fittings near London at my Sutton Surrey studio, the gown was carefully restructured and refined to contour correctly through the body while preserving the elegance, softness, and fluidity of the original Monreal design.

I also specialise in wedding dresses requiring significant restructuring and resizing of multiple dress sizes

Sample sale and discontinued wedding dresses often require careful structural bridal alterations to rebalance the proportions of the gown correctly while maintaining the integrity of the original silhouette.

Working with minimalist fitted designer gowns such as the Monreal Iris dress requires particularly careful structural bridal alterations, as every contour, seam line, and balance point remains highly visible within the final silhouette.

For this gown, careful attention was given to refining the fit through the body, balancing the train correctly, and preserving the clean lines of the dress throughout the alteration process.

Part of the restructuring also involved correcting a slight pull that formed through the front of the gown at bust level on my bride — so the drape and seam lines sat cleanly and symmetrically across the body. With minimalist fitted wedding dresses, even subtle imbalances can affect the overall silhouette, making careful structural refinement particularly important.

The aim throughout the fittings was not simply to resize the gown, but to ensure the finished dress felt elegant, effortless, and beautifully balanced from every angle.

7-Point Wedding Dress Bustle

The gown also required a detailed 7-point bustle to support the train correctly for the evening reception.

Creating a multi-point bustle involves carefully distributing the weight of the train so the gown lifts evenly while still preserving the original silhouette and movement of the dress.

For this gown, each bustle point was positioned carefully beneath the train to allow the dress to transition comfortably from ceremony to evening reception while maintaining the clean lines of the gown once lifted.

Bustle work often remains invisible in final wedding photographs, yet it is one of the most important structural elements of bridal alterations for fitted wedding dresses with longer trains.

Preparing the Dress for Travel to Scotland

After the final fittings, the gown was carefully steam pressed, packed, and prepared for travel ahead of the wedding in Scotland.

Travelling with a structured wedding dress requires careful preparation to help preserve the shape and finish of the gown during the journey. The bride travelled with the dress by train before the final wedding preparations began, making careful finishing and packing especially important.

Seeing the finished Monreal Iris gown worn against the Scottish landscape after months of fittings and refinement was incredibly special. The final result reflected not only the beauty of the original design, but also the importance of careful bridal alterations in transforming a much-loved dress into something that feels truly personal to the bride wearing it.
